OK, I need some help/advice.

I’m building myself a new machine, but its been so long since I build anything, that I have lost touch with new technology, as you know its like starting from scratch again !

I’m having a problem choosing between an Intel or AMD CPU.

These are my needs for the new PC:

1 – Will be using machine to study and test build the following systems :
• Windows 2003 Server
• Citrix
• Linux
• Windows XP – This just standard to run day to day and play games

Now I will be loading VMware server to split all the systems.
I’m not huge into gaming so don’t need the best GPU !!

What would be the best CPU for this kind of system, and why ?

I’m not on a big budget, can push £400 for the box, but still need to buy a monitor on top of that.

This is what I was thinking about when I started looking, but am very confused !!

Case: Antec Black SLK1650 Mini Tower Case - With 350W SmartPower PSU
Motherboard: ASUS M2N-E, NF570, S AM2, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2 GHz Socket AM2 L2 1 MB (2x512KB) Retail Box
Memory: 1Gb CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-12
Graphics: Asus Nvidia 7600GT 256MB DDR3 TV out DVI PCI-E
Hard Dive: Western Digital WD2500KS Caviar SE 250GB 7200RPM SATA2/300 16MB Cache - OEM
DVD RW: Sony AW-G170AB2 18xDVD±RW/RAM Dual Layer Writer Black - Bare Drive

Any help would be great.
Many thanks

The Intel Core 2 Duo 'Conroe' is easily the best cpu available, and the prices are good too.

Check the CPU forum, and you'll see what I mean.
