Hey guys.

I've been tasked with building up a system for my nephew. It's a few years since my last build which I had amazing help from you gurus so naturally I thought to reach out again. I've only been supplied with limited information so please forgive me if I miss anything off. Of course I can ask any questions and update this post as we go.

So in short he would like a system that is capable of Gaming and Video Editing. (I think he wants to record game footage, edit and upload to video hosting websites).

Very maximum budget is £1200 but this does not include any peripherals as my brother says he will get these for him separately. Although please do offer suggestions. He wants to have dual monitors. I haven't been given a budget for peripherals so maybe something comparable to the build cost.

He currently only has a laptop so there is no real preference on hardware choices. So we are completely open for suggestions.

As for timeframe I think if it was left to my nephew he would have it today, but purchasing will happen over the week or so.

Sorry my bad I should have used the template for ease.

Purchase Timeframe: The next week or so.

Budget: £1000 - £1200

Usage: Gaming/ Video Editing

Preferences: None

Current Hardware: None

Peripherals: They will be a separate purchase so not needed on this post.

Special Needs/Requirements Built in WiFi would be great.
(inc Wi-Fi):

Thanks for the list.

No the monitors are not included in the budget. I believe the ones they've seen are 27" with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 at around £100 each.

The editing software I'm told is something called DaVinci Resolve. I've never got into editing videos so that's a new one to me.

Davinci is heavily GPU bound anyway, so for gaming + davinci I would opt for a Ryzen over an intel build, acknowledge that you do get less cores for your £££ with Ryzen. But better gaming performance.
Also if using a lot of the "AI" components of davinci then an Nvidia GPU is the way to go. Radeons do not do well with "AI"

Taking into account what @tamzzy has mentioned, swap the 9070 with the following if video editing is a big deal for your nephew:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £502.98 (includes delivery: £7.99)

Less VRAM than the 5060ti above but better performance in games by a fair chunk, should be fine for 1080P however. I would still recommend the 9070 over it should the use-case be much more gaming skewed.

thing is with davinci, it's an absolute vram hog, realistically you'd want 16gb if going to use davinci a lot, unfortunately

From a little reading you're not wrong, but I'm wondering how much of an impact 12gb vs 16gb will have for editing 1080P footage? Nvidia really did a number on the mid range with the silly VRAM amount of the 5070, I'd never normally recommend it due to that deficit alone.

can't say 100% for certain, but if using a lot of effects...who knows?
really stuck between a rock and a hard place. if can hold off, should wait for 5070 super

Pretty much, but hey they had to find some way to make the supers work given they'll otherwise just be OC'd versions of the same thing.

On the upside, I've no doubt bios flashing will return as a (more prominent) trend for the enthusiasts among us.

I suspect the nephew is wanting to do some light online streaming and a bit of hobbyist stuff, but that's purely speculation based on what the OP has said.

@tamzzy @Gray2233

Well, always OP can just keep saving in the meantime...the 5070ti solves the vram problem for da vinci resolve and puget says it's a beast for vid editing...not to mention step up for gaming also, and nephew can really start looking at 4k down the line as a monitor if he wants, upside being the cpu becomes less relevant for gaming also, relying more on the gpu side of things. put the pro-a mobo in there as bit more robust than the b850m-x and not that much more in cost. I'd suggest getting a 7700 or something as an import for £150 (just highlighting to make OP double aware cpu not included in below), so takes build to £1300, which I know is over budget but @Paul_G73 , you said open to suggestions, so keep saving a bit longer...was suprised to see the phanteks case come with 3 m25 fans installed..they cost £10 each or £26 for triple pack, so your getting the case for £30-35...compromise at mo is only a 1tb ssd, but can add another at a later date..also, only £2 diff for rgb/non rgb ram, so seeing as for op nephew went with rgb..£2 pretty irrelevant considering overall cost
could swap psu for phanteks also..same price.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,152.85 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Thanks so much guys. I really appreciate the effort looking at things for me. I'll see the nephew over the weekend and maybe suggest he sits tight a while longer and saves a bit more. Not easy for a nearly 18 year to do though.

 I just did a build for my sons friend for his 18th...had the 7600x3d in there but I said wait, i could probably get a 7800x3d 2nd hand for less give a week or so...anyway, he puchased the lot the next day, and low and behold, a 7800x3d came up 8 days later for sale...no patience, just like my son..get excited and that's it..no waiting
