New system build for software development

Hi all,

I'm a developer looking to rebuild my main development machine which is about 4 years old now (got a Core i5-2500 at the time), nothing particularly wrong with it, but enough time has passed that I think a new system would be a big upgrade!

My main priorities are:
- maximise single-thread performance, which software dev stuff is usually bottlenecked on, no need for loads of cores
- I do some graphics work so a modern high-end GPU (but probably won't be gaming on it)
- quiet system, not too much fan noise
- high-spec but not extreme, probably won't bother overclocking it
- only replacing the tower, keeping same keyboard/mouse/display etc

Here's my spec so far:
Case: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/fractal-design-define-s-midi-tower-black-ca-028-fd.html
PSU: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/be-quiet-system-power-7-450w-80-plus-silver-power-supply-ca-092-bq.html
Mobo: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-z170-pro-gaming-intel-z170-socket-1151-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-648-as.html
CPU: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/intel-core-i7-6700k-4.0ghz-skylake-socket-lga1151-processor-retail-cp-581-in.html
CPU cooler: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/be-quiet-shadow-rock-lp-low-profile-cpu-cooler-120mm-hs-011-bq.html

SSD: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/samsung-500gb-850-evo-ssd-2.5-sata-6gbps-32-layer-3d-v-nand-solid-state-drive-mz-75e500b-eu-hd-192-sa.html
Graphics: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-geforce-gtx-1070-aero-8g-oc-8192mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-32g-ms.html

Just want to check it is all compatible, will fit in case, choices make sense etc. Does this look like a sensible build?

Very similar to the build I put together a couple of months ago, GPU aside. Looks well balanced and you should have no problems with the case choice. I used the Define R5 and it's wonderfully quiet, but the Define S is equally quiet I believe.

Only thing I might change is bumping the PSU up to 550W Gold so you have a little bit of headroom.

Also if you're not gaming on it isn't a 1070 rather overkill for graphics work?

Thanks for the opinion. I can see the 1070 is probably somewhat overkill, but my old system is still running a GTX 660. I figure the 1070 will keep well for my next system or two, plus, I may be tempted by the odd game or two to put it through its paces...

I'm still using a GTX 660 in my 6700k build, until I decide what to replace it with. Lots of new cards being released and prices all over the place at the moment. The 660 is actually still a pretty passable card at 1080p, so depending on your monitor you could perhaps put it in your new build temporarily until it's clearer how the current / forthcoming crop of cards (1060, 1070, 1080, RX 460, 470 480) line up against each other and where prices settle at.
