I am tinkering with the idea of building a new Hi Spec machine. I was considering getting a Mac Book Pro for the fun of it but for the money and the fact that I would hardly use it I thought why not use the money to build a new system minus a few bits from my current one.

I have been building my own systems for years now so I haven’t got any issues with that but thought I would have a look at what "pre built" systems there are on offer these days.

So I had a look over on overclockers and this little beauty caught my eye.

Pricy I know but I have always fancied going Water-cooled and having it pre done seems a nice idea. The spec I think on this one is pretty darn good and I would only need to make a few alterations on the none essentials i.e no Blu Ray drive as I already have one.

There are a couple of things that I have a few issues with, for example its running on DDR2 memory and has a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 Quad Core processor which I know is the dogs dangles but is this technology going to be "left behind" shortly in favour of DDR3 and the Intel Core i7 processors so would it be best to go for a system with this on.

The GPU I know is one of the best on the market so that should last me a while :)

I would also need a new monitor, I have looked at these two as examples.

Being Water cooled isn’t that essential but as I say I have always fancied having a WC machine.

Would anyone on here go down the route of buying a pre built machine like this or is it a waste of money and I should buy separate parts and build it my self

Please give me more examples / ideas of specs / systems etc so I can have a think at what to do.

Purpose for the system will be serious gaming and using HD content (authoring and playback etc)

I wouldn't pay £2k for c2d and DDR2 in an Antec 300 case.

You can do so much better with the money.

It wouldn't be impossible to spec an i7 920 setup, with an SSD boot drive and watercooling for that amount.

Thanks for your input. See that's how I feel so I just want to weigh up all of my options for 2k. Oh and I wouldn't pick the Antec 300 case ;)...

I agree with Ben_M here, firstly for that price point I'd be expecting an SSD (or even two in a RAID setup), the graphics card is excellent though, 4GB (WTF! more please). If I where you'd I get a Phenom II 720 and clock it to about 3.4Ghz, couple it with 8GB DDRII and 2x sammy 64GB SSD's, add to that a 1TB drive for backups, a decent graphics card and spend the rest of a HD TV to connect it too (and of course throw in a GTX 280/295)

Yeah the more I look at the spec the more I think I can get better for my coin. I am new to SSD's but from what I can see if you want a decent amount of storage then its going to cost you. At present I run my OS on on a 360GB SATAII drive and have another internal 360GB and an 1TB external drive for my HD content. Is getting a SSD really worth the extra money, is the difference that good? I also feel I want DDR3 if I am going to spend this sort of money.

Oh and don't need a HD TV as I already have a nice new 37" 1080p Toshiba LCD in my room :)

I am just having a play on the OC site making up various machines.

When you say reserved what will this CPU go to just being air cooled?

All this SSD talk, I just cant fix my mind on it. 64GB isn't a lot. My OS HDD is at 65GB and that has **** all on it. I think I really would need a bigger drive.

My perfect spec I think...
