went to O'C yesterday morning to pick up some new bits..

I was going to get a 8800 gts 640mb gpc crd but decided to get the £200 BFG 8800gts 320mb card instead

after spending 6 hours making it all work together...but thats another sory lol

Spec is now:

E2160 @ stock 1.8ghz
Abit AB9 Pro mobo with uGuru
2 gig DDR2 667 ram (2 x 1 gig sticks)
Thermalight Heatsink and fan
BFG 8800 gts 320mb gpu
Aerogate fan contoller hooked up to 2 case fans
Sata II 250gb HDD
Huntkey 550w PSU

Is this rig ok for some nice O'Cing now... im looking to get about another gig out of the chip... around 2.6 - 2.8 ghz.

Is it going to play new games well? Im a noob to gaming, and a noob to O'Cing.

I know i needed directx 10 for up and coming games... so is this rig ok?

Seems like a good set of components to me, would have prefered a P35 based motherboard, but still, it should easily do 3GHz+ (see my E2140 overclocking thread for more details).

I recently got an E2160 to see if I could get higher than my E2140, and whilst I can (E2140 does 3.375GHz, E2160 can do 3.45GHz), the decrease in memory speed I get by doing this negates any performance I gain with the extra 750MHz CPU clockspeed.

It will be a fine rig for current and up and coming games.

If there is anything specific you need to ask RE: overclocking, just ask :)

cool, thanks paradigm. :D for the first time in my life i have a half decent PC lol!

Will certainly ask if theres anything i need to know! ;)

I'm going to read your e2140 thread now, im sure i'll find it useful....

Many thanks for the reply.... Icant wait to finnish work and get O'Cing!

**need to buy a game that will actually test the gpu now! lol**

Get 3Dmark06 downloaded, ok sure its not as "fun" as playing a game (well it can be, i guess it depends on if you find benchmarking/tweaking/overclocking fun), but it will certainly stretch the legs of your system and give you a bit of an insight into its performance.

Best bet is to download 3DMark06 and run it with your PC at stock settings, then do all your overclocking (both CPU and GFX), and then run it again to see what kind of performance increases you get :)

I'd envisage you managing at least 3GHz fully stably with that setup :)

Mint, will download 3d marks 06 as soon as i get home!

I have actually enjoyed fixing PC's for a while now, its a good little extra income.. so im sure i'll enjoy benchmarking, less headaches! lol

so to try it at stock at first, then test again at stable OC on both Gpu and Cpu... whats a good score? 10000+? seen a few people mention 3d marks before...

THIS thread should be your new best friend :p

You will see current members 3dMark06 scores along with their system spec's and overclocks (both CPU and GFX), which is a good reference point for seeing how your system is performing.

10,000 seems to be around the target point of a 320MB 8800 GTS and a 2.7-2.9GHz C2D.

Many thanks, I will be back to let you know how i get on.

Your a star paradigm ;)

I've switched back to my E2160 just to give it one last chance to clock further than my E2140, if I can't better 3.4GHz stable tonight then its going in the "redundant CPU pile". :D

he he he

LOL how can you make a 2160 redundent.... :D my redundent pile is actually redundent...as in a broken celeron D 3ghz, and an Iffy pentium D 3.2, neither lasted more than 6 weeks thanks to a shabby Asrock dual core VSTA mobo.

had a mess with MHz and got up to 2.6 with no problems... reset to stock now while i downlaod 3dmarks.

I can make it redundant because I have a harder clocking E2140 :p

I've given it my all, but without stupid voltage the E2160 just won't run at the same clockspeeds as my E2140 :(

E2160 is now officially retired. Its 2 days old :p

let us know what 3dmark06 scores you get i would be interested in that.

will post them up Barry asap.... still got about 20 mins of downloading left.. crappy bt broadband

will post before and after clock..

i cant pm you barry, so i'll post it here, aswell as submitting it to the "3dmarks results thread"

cpu @ 1925 mhz

Gpu @ 601 mhz / 800

result 7677

no clock was at 7133

3DMark06 is highly CPU dependant (because of the two CPU rendering tests), get another GHz onto the clockspeed of the CPU (it WILL do it), and run the test again :p

well i had it running at 2.6 ghz, however, i dont know what i actually did to get it to run at that now... i upped the Mhz to make it 2.6 this morning and just get a long steady dos beep... reset the cmos.. however i cant remeber what i actually did... the ram speed was around 722 mhz, when it wouldnt work.

I think its something to do with the ram speed? i take it my cheapo ram is part of the problem...

Any advice would be great, i fell soooo thick! lol

It probably was your RAM speed, there will be an option somewhere in your BIOS to run the memory at different "straps", should be an option to choose something along the lines of an FSB/DRAM ratio, or possibly something that resembles actual memory speeds (be that PC ratings i.e. PC6400 or MHz ratings i.e 400MHz, 466MHz, 533MHz)

I've never seen the BIOS for an AB9 PRO so i'm not 100% sure what exactly you will be looking for and where.

Give me a few mins and i'll look at the manual for your board.

Many thanks once again..

I thought it was something to do with the ram speed... as I upped the cpu Mhz the ram speed rose to to high a freq...

So thats what my bro did to allow me to gety 2.6ghz.. ( hate it when some one helps and your not really taking notice of them at the time! lol)

I'll get messing as soon as i get my son into bed tonight, so i can concentrate a bit  bloody kids...

Went out today and bought a couple of games, Ghost recon Advanced warfighter, and the best deal.... from poundland, yep pound land.... Men of valour vietnam war game.... graphics arent anywhere near as good as ghost recon, but fot £1 i'll play it! :D (because im tight lol)

I'll up my new 3dmarks06 scores later!

Neal ;)

cool, set ram cpu ratio of 3:4 (could be 4:3) and wound it straight up to 2.2 no problem so will edge it up as the night goes on... with benchmarks in between...

would have been lost without you.

3d marks score now 8201 link compare
