Hello,

I'm after a little help sanity checking a new system. The brief is:

  • primarily a multi-user desktop for work, music (lineout through HiFi) and occcasional movie
  • a little little light gaming usage, eg. Grand Prix Legends / Quake3 / MS Flightsim
  • as silent as possible, always on
  • RAID mirrors, legacy printer/scanner/serial devices to support
  • needs to last another 5 years (like the last PC) with minimal upgrades
  • not really fussed about overclocking
  • looks good :-)
  • hot study, with system stood on plush carpet
Budget is around £1000 with a LG 226WTQ or £1300 with a Dell 2407wfp, and i'm always happy to save a few pounds :-)

My concerns are
  • That I haven't introduced an incompatibility; either memory/cpu/motherboard or case/component dimensions.
  • Whether my case/psu/cooler/hd choice is going to be quiet enough.
  • If there is any driver/support issue around using OcUK brand graphics card.
  • Whether the gfx card is man enough to drive the 2407wfp or if I could get way with a 8600 (or alternative).
  • Will Vista 64bit take MS Office XP, or should I stick with 32bit?
  • Software or hardware RAID? Does SW RAID work in Vista?
And the proposed shopping list is:
  • Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard (£93.99)
  • GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (£70.49)
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.33GHz (1333FSB) - Retail (£111.61)
  • Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775) (£31.71)
  • 2xSamsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (£136.28)
  • 2xSamsung SH-183LBEBN 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer Serial ATA Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) (£39.92)
  • Sony Floppy Drive - Black (£5.86)
  • Lian Li PC-A05B Aluminium Midi-Tower - Black (£77.54)
  • Hiper HPU-4M580 580W ATX2.2 PSU - Black (£49.34)
  • OcUK GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (£187.99)
  • Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Midnight Grey (£434.74)
  • Dell AS501 Soundbar for Dell UltraSharp Flat Panel Monitors (£11.74)
  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00788) (£64.61)
  • Keysonic 540RF keyboard/mouse ???
  • Total : £1,345.14
Comments and advice much appreciated!

Cheers,
Rich

I have the 'OcUK' 8800 card and it's actually this one. Nowhere on the box/manual/card does it say 'OcUK'. I get my drivers from Nvidia just like everyone else, and there's no compatability problems.
