Hi All,

Looking for some advice on a new build, I've been out of the loop for a few years as I sold my last PC when my daughter was born but looking to get a new system built after seeing the video's for Fallout 4!

So system capable of running the above, I still have my old NEC 24WMGX3 monitor but possible looking at something a little larger and I've got a case/PSU/peripherals so looking at the rest of the components.

I was thinking a GTX 970 unless someone has a better suggestion but not really sure where to start with CPU/Mobo.

I previously had an i7 920 D0 and I'm sure things have moved on a bit from there I just really don't have the time at the moment to go looking for the info so do I need an i7 or is i5 acceptable these days?

Any advice is appreciated, Thanks

Hi

An i5 is still fine for gaming. The 970 is a good choice for 1080p/1440p gaming.

You might be able to find a cheap 290/X if you don't mind AMD cards. The 290 is going for the same sort of price as a 390 though at the moment, so they are not great value.

The 290X seems to be a bit cheaper than the 390X.

If you only plan on running a single graphics card then any ATX Z97 board will be fine (Assuming you want an ATX sized build). I would stick with Gigabyte or Asus.

If you are not going to overclock then you could go with a cheaper locked i5 and a H97 board (Assuming it is cheaper than the Z97) Just be aware that H97 doesn't support SLI.

A 550W or so psu is fine for a single card. Go with 750W for SLI and maybe 850W for crossfire.

EVGA GS and G2 are good choices. Or if you don't mind a non modular unit then you have the Superflower golden green and Antec true power classic.

Are you going to be building this yourself ? Or are you getting OCUK to build it ?

If you state your budget and what you need (i.e Tower, operating system, mouse/keyboard etc) then you can get a better idea of what you can get.

I've got a few bits and pieces, see below so looking to add some updated components to these

Case - Silverstone FT01W
Monitor - NEC 24WMGX3
PSU - Corsair HX 1000W

Keyboard/Mouse/Disks are covered, got all sorts around.

So I need a motherboard, CPU, memory and graphics card with budget of around £7-800.

I'd prefer a Nvidia card, they seem to have been better for Skyrim and I suspect the same would be true of Fallout.

Just to check this is your current case ?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone Fortress FT01 Windowed Case - Black (SST-FT01B-W USB 3.0) £141.95
Total : £151.55 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

Something along these lines would be good:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£12 Saving** £277.98
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N970WF3OC-4GD) £257.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX318C10FBK2/8) £49.99
Total : £595.56 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

If you are big on aesthetics then swap the above board for the gigabyte gaming 5. The Z97X SLI board has a dark brown pcb instead of black.

You will have to get the i5 cpu separate though as it isn't available in a bundle with the gaming 5 ATX afaik.

And don't forget to login for your free shipping when you go to checkout :)
