Hey all,

I'm coming from a 5 year old laptop with Win 7 to a new desktop build.

Apologies if this is an annoying question, I did have a good look in the stickies first - What's the best current option for me Windows wise?

When last I looked a while back people were saying avoid windows 10, is it the main choice now? I'm seeing it mentioned a lot.

If so, am I better off buying an old copy of Windows 7 and doing an upgrade?

Are most buying 10 outright now?

Appreciate all advice on my options.

Only you can decide if 10 is good for you. Download a 30 day trial.

If you like it then the 7 to 10 upgrade will be the cheapest route.

If a new desktop build means an intel skylake processor then you will need to get windows 10 since it isn't going to fully support windows 7.

Pick yourself up the retail version of Windows 10 Home for around £86.
Unlike the OEM copies it isn't tied to the first hardware you use it on, so you can take the license from machine to machine in the future.

Personally I love Windows 10. Can't see myself going back to an older version of Windows at all. I know some people get annoyed with all the tracking that Microsoft do but if you are careful you can block most of it and it doesn't really bother me anyway.

Plus Windows 10 is fast as hell on all my systems. I haven't had a single problem with it since I have upgraded.

I think Microsoft through fair means and foul (mostly the latter) have pretty much limited you to W10 now. I don't think earlier versions are viable options. So really it's a choice between Windows and GNU/Linux. (Or Mac, but that's not a self-build option).
