New system won't POST, run out of ideas/tests

Hi folks

Just put together a new system and it won't POST. Press the power button and it lights up for a second, fans spin and then it powers off again. It then tries to turn itself on again and the same thing happens, this just keeps looping until I power it off with the PSU switch.

I've done a PSU test using the paper clip and that is fine. I've reset the CMOS (battery out) and it hasnt made any difference. I've had the motherboard out onto a breadboard and it hasn't made any difference. Ive unplugged all devices (HDD's etc), reseated power cables etc but its not made any difference.

I'm starting to think a DOA motherboard but when its plugged in and not powered I get the motherboard lights coming on (start button, reset, LEDs etc).

Any other ideas before I send stuff back?

Its an ASUS Rampage Gene motherboard,
3930K CPU,
8GB Corsair DDR3,
be quiet Pure Power L8 650W PSU,
Phanteks TC-14PE cooler.
(All new apart from the CPU which was second hand)

any dram or cpu red led's light up?

checked cpu socket for any bent pins? first try a quarter turn undone on each cpu cooler mounting screw (then try booting up)

Didnt try just one stick of ram, will do that in the morning.

Havn't tried ROG connect as I didn't think it would work due to not having a windows laptop.

Q connect was used originally but I removed it and used the onboard "start" button to see if I had just wired it up wrong.

A short was one of my initial thoughts as the case came with inbuilt standoffs and strange motherboard screws I havn't seen before. I took the motherboard out of the case to see if that made any difference but it didn't.

One LED did seem to light up near the 24pin connector, might have been the DRAM. Seem to remember it saying that MemOK! was running but will double check in the morning. No other LED's on the board to signify any warnings/errors. Also checked for bent pins but couldn't find any.

Thanks for all the info and help so far folks, I'll be having another look in the morning to see if I can get to the bottom of it.

Does motherboard require a bios update to run that cpu?

edit : checked site and seems not as just needs bios 1005 (presuming i have the right mb)
best check youself just in case :)

Ok had another look this morning.

I flashed the BIOS with a different version in case it was still on the stock one but that hasn't helped.

I also tried it with one memory module but again, no change.

However one of my QLED's is on when the system tries to start. Its the CPU one. I have had the CPU out and checked for bent pins but can't see any. I have reseated the CPU and tried again but still nothing.

Fried CPU?

One Last thing to test is the voltages on the psu. Get a multimeter and check the pwr_ok line. If the voltage is low on that then it doesn't tell the CPU to post and you get the same endless cycle. Worth a go. Or try a different PSU if you have one to hand.

Check the other rails voltages as well while you are at it (all on the 24pin so just do the paper clip method and google which colour is which line and what voltages they should be).

I no with my Asus Z97 Gryphon, I had to update the bios, before it would take the G3258, even though it stated it was compatible.

Another update:

Tried a bios update and still nothing. I don't have a multimeter so can't test the PSU voltages and dont have another PSU either.

Going to have a mission to sort out returns with these but lesson learned I guess...pay extra and get proper reseller support! (and items that will actually work!)

One final update

I tested my PSU with a multimeter and it was fine so I have returned both the CPU and Motherboard.

Ordered a i7 4790K and Gryphon Z97 bundle from OCUK yesterday morning and it arrived today, system is now humming along nicely beside me.

Thanks to you guys for the advice/suggestions and thanks to OCUK for their excellent service.
