Going to be building up a new system for gaming, internet, media etc

Should i go for XP or do the jump to vista?

vista obviously still has a few driver and software issues, but support for XP is to be terminated at the end of this year isnt it?

I just cant decide!

I would seriously doubt if support for XP will end that early. I thought it was up until 2009 or something.

It depends how heavily you'll rely on it, be willing to work at it to get it right etc

XP is a safe choice as more or less everything works with it, Vista is getting there slowly...

If I were buying, it'd be Vista. But if I were choosing, it'd be XP at the moment. If that makes any sense :p

Id dual boot! Best of both worlds. Depends if you're buying tho

(before anyone starts, I get mine via work)

Licences for XP of windows will not be available from Microsoft for new machines (i.e. Pre-Built) as of Janurary 2008. Microsoft will continue to support XP for some time after this date. Source

IMO Windows XP is still a FAR better O/S in the same way that Win2k is a better O/S than XP in that it's not slowed down by 'useful' odds and sods that Microsoft has come up with to make the 'end user experience' more enjoyable. But I'm an end user and I don't want a little box telling me that there's something wrong with my internet connection, I know there's something wrong because OcUK won't load! Just repair and get on with it! Oh and I HATE the new filing system in Vista.

However, the smart money says that programs are slowly going to become more and more Vista dependant and providing you can put up with the little annoyances and get a machine that doesn't make it feel as slow as the manufacturing process then its OK and you will have saved yourself £60/90 in the long run :)

Both of them are capable at doing those tasks fine. Some argue that XP trumps Vista in gaming, but it's really down to individual games and drivers rather than a clear cut XP > Vista. Many people have no issues whatsoever with games on Vista.

Being a new OS, driver support is still in its infancy. many 3rd party programs aren't compatible yet or have limited Vista support. However mainstream programs and drivers seem to have no problems. Driver updates and patches for Vista are being released all the time, so any driver issues you do come across will be ironed out at some point. If you're concerned, you should do some homework on Vista and it's compatibility with all the hardware and software you'll be using. Look for any known issues, if you find none, it's a pretty safe bet that you'll have no problems.

As for XP support, I don't know where you heard that from, but I can tell you now that XP support is scheduled to continue up until 2014.

Thanks for that, has been really helpful, will have a look around and see about a number of things

I may have heard wrong about it being 2008, might be what the guy a few posts above said :p

if i was u i would go for vista...

ive had no problems with the 32bit and 64bit of vista..

i would say the ati drivers are much better then nVidia for vista...

also if u have xp already u could install both...
