Hi Guys

Wondering if you can help me here. I'm looking to upgrade my system next year or maybe this year if the price is right :p

But it has been awhile since my last upgrade which means I am stuck with AGP graphics, IDE Hard Drives, DDR memory and what all this Dual core 64 bit nonsense ;)

Anyway, you guys help loads with my last build (ABiit NF7-2 with a overlocked 1GHz AMD mobile)

So what I'm looking is:
NVIDIA 8800 GTX :p
A motherboard with one IDE port for my two DVD drives and at least 2 PCI slots for my X-Fi and an IDE controller card (for my current harddrives), with enough left over space to possibly go SLi at a future date.
And a CPU and RAM that will not bottleneck the system
And power supply for the new graphics card (thats easy enough to pick really)

I'm aiming for around £1,000 mark

Cheers

I don't think you can do this and do justice to the whole system, the graphics card takes up nearly half your budget before you begin. I'd suggest a bit of a compromise, you still get an 8800series card, a very good motherboard for overclocking, good Ram and a CPU that ought to be good for 3ghz+.

Nice, totally  with the fact that them Intel chips can be pushed so much.

Dont think I'll need the case still got my Antec P180 that I got the other year was really impressed with that as well. Or the hard drive, my plan was to jump over to SATA when I make the move to Vista latter next year.

My budget was not set in stone, just seemed like a nice starting number :p Dont mind being £200-300 over.

I'm planning on selling off some bits and bobs as well, so hopefully that will cover some of the cost.

There aren't any guarantees with overclocking but that would be one of the best combinations for the price and give you the best possible chance. The motherboard won't allow SLi, you would need an Nforce 680 based motherboard for that(which costs about double) but I don't honestly think there is much point when you have a single graphics card that can equal or beat a pair of Crossfired X1950XTs.

The only things I'd suggest you check are that the 8800GTX will fit into your P180 as they are pretty big cards I believe and secondly maybe check to make sure there aren't any known problems with compatability between the motherboard and graphics card. :)

Dont you just hate build a new systems. Compatability is always a thing that scares me (not that I have been hit with the problem that often) but when you have been out of the new hardware loop for awhile it is a worry.

The case should be fine as I don't use the top chamber for my hard drives, so if it dont fit with the holder in I'll just take it out.

With you on the SLi point though. Never see the point of having enough power to do uber over the top FPS.

I going to poke around abit and see if I can shave some pennys off in a few places.
