Hi all,

Let me introduce myself: My name is Jamie, I'm an avid gamer & it's my first post here! (And won't be the last.)

I'm a sorry excuse for a PC gamer, I've been cheating on myself with the 360.. :( It's time to move away from such an outdated bit of kit and slide into something a bit more modern.

Recently, I've been getting really bored with its lacklustre graphics and the impossible controller aiming. Especially after reviewing BF3 comparisons. I've decided to come back to the light-side and get back into serious PC gaming.

After that mini-rant, here's the reason for my post - I've just treated myself to a new system:

  • Intel Core i7 2600K
  • Asus P8Z68-V PRO Intel Z68 M
  • Asus ATI Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II 2048MB GDDR5 (Will be flashing it to a HD 6970 :D)
  • IIyama Prolite E2273HDS 22" Widescreen LED Monitor
  • Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 750W V2
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache
  • Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz
  • OcUK Vantage Gaming Tower Case - Black
  • Samsung SH-S222AB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 High Performance CPU Cooler

The only thing that sad-faced me about my order, was I ordered the OCZ 750W supply. Mainly because it came with a MW3 pre-order. But unfortunately, by the time I hit 'check-out', the order was retracted :(
My budget was about £1000, not that it mattered too much. I bought all the parts separate and managed to swag a system that was £1005.58 - with shipping - Awesome!

I don't feel the need for CF (just at the minute). But my guess is I'll swipe another HD6950 when I realise I've made a massive mistake of only having one graphics card.

So, after having the same dismal, sluggish and (now) broken system for just over 4 years, you could say, I'm a little excited... As my girlfriend quite plainly said, just after my order went into the warehouse queue, she's not seen a 10 year old as excited as me.

I'm almost, literally, like a Jack Russell, on crack, with rabies and ADHD. You'll get to see my 10-year-old-esque energy in action as I'll take some big grinning photos of the build-journey and upload them here.

Afterwards, I'm counting on you guys for some great OC'ing tips for the Z68 & Sandy Bridge. It is being air cooled, as you can see, with the AC Freezer. What kind of voltages & temps would I be expecting from that combo? - 1.3/1.35 @ 4.4/4.6GHz? About 50-60C?

I'm needing to phone up the OcUK crew and plead for the delivery date to be Friday - I specified Monday, since I'm on holiday next week - But I think I'll need it for this weekend, since I'm not playing rugby, with a groin injury... Yeah, it does sound awfully convenient and, well, it really just is awfully convenient! ;)

You could say, I'm thanking my groin for giving out on me last Saturday!

I'll hopefully see you guys online :)

Do we have any sort of gaming leader boards or clans on the boards? :)

Happy fragging,
Jamie.

Hey guys - Thanks for the support!

I'll post (happy) tear-stained updates when the rig arrives.

There aren't words to describe how stoked I am for a fresh, new and awesome gaming rig. My old one literally had no front panel because I bust it by accident! :(

Decent set of components but from the sounds of it the system is mainly aimed at gaming I would have gone for a i5 2500K instead of the i7 and put the savings towards a 24" monitor, better case or CPU cooler or even a small 64GB SSD for OS & a game or two. Also not sure how compatible that cooler will be with the Vengeance RAM as it has tall needless heatsinks. Hope you enjoy it.

I had the same bad feeling about the (Jedward) RAM... But over on another forum, someone had a similar get-up in their sig and they didn't seem to complain about it. So, with some luck, I may be okay. Even if the fan does 'clip' or intrude on the RAM, I'll give them a well deserved haircut! Or simply send them back for another, similarly specced and lower profile model.

I stay with the Mrs, and she likes the 'neat' things in life. If I got a 5 foot tall PC case delivered, I think she might die. Since I'm only getting my 'man-cave' set up, and the PC will be residing in the living room until it's finished!! :O

I just thought I'd splash for the i7.. No idea why, but it jumped out at me more than the i5 did... Bah. It was just that gut instinct; everything that caught my eye was yelling 'Buy Me!' in a squeaky voice.

I'm going to go for an SSD, in the future, but not just now :) - I quite like the Z68 'cache' option. Or I could just use the SSD as a main Windows/*Nix drive.
