Yknow I am getting kind of annoyed at how theres always something new only a touch better then before just around the corner. I get the distint impression that is, say, graphics card companies decided not to release anything for over 2 years and put all their efforts in to RnD then because of the lack of time going in to making the tech fit pcs and working on advertising etc, the resulting projects they could bring out would theoretically be far better then what they would have come up with in that time normally. does anyone else agree?

I think technology could advance way faster if there was larger gaps between releases.

They need to maximise profits, if that means releasing upgrades bit by bit, they will do it. Afterall, we need more companies to farm our money!

Well I think you're wrong, the consumer market doesn't really drive how fast technological advances are made in R&D.

Its not like the manufacturing dept of GFX card manufacturers and the R&D depts of the same company would be manned by the same staff, they will be working independently of each other.

Your point is valid... if a little un-interesting :p

I think you have to think of each release of a new GFX card (using your example) as a beta. If a manufacturer doesn't release anything into the mass market for 2 years, it's quite likely they could get things grossly wrong.
The more they release, the more they can tweak said product each time a new version comes out, to make it better.

Putting all this money on Research & Development is good and well, but their is no substitute for real customer feedback.
