New to ADSL help!!

I have moved into a new flat and due to budget constraints I have a choice between 2 options.

Get sky with sports and keep my mobile broadband connection (£15pm)

Get broadband and use skyplayer from my mums connection

Now I don't have a connected phone line, I don't think. I have a wall plug that says BT openzone on it.

Now my questions,

If I didn't go with BT then could plusnet or BE connect my phoneline, is there a cost?

How can I find out speeds before I install a line, as if I am using Skyplayer etc I will need around 3mb. There is no point geting Broadband if I cant get this, I may as well stay on my 1-2mbps mobile connection

Difficult without getting a line connected etc. I'm sure only BT can do this at moment (could be wrong) and it's something like £100 + VAT, so £120!
