Hi, I am rebuilding my liquid cooled rig this weekend and am moving from a 3700+ and PC3200. Its been a while since I looked at new kit, but I have settled on the Asus P5B-E Plus board and a E6600 but am confused about the memory I need.

whats all the 4-4-4-12? Are these just latency timings and is there really that much difference? if so what would be the cheapest memory to get and what would be the benefit of over clocking the memory? I have been looking at the following.

Crucial Ballistix (4-4-4-12) for £124
OCZ (4-4-4-15) for £112
Geil (4-4-4-12) for £117

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Geil and OCZ are both on special offer this week. I bought the Geil and haven't had a problem with it but still have to wait a little longer until I get a DS3 before I can really push it.

Thanks for the replies. :) Okay its 50/50 between Geil and OCZ. do the timings make a big difference and can the memory be over clocked?

The memory will be overclocked along with your cpu. You can use the 2x multiplier on the DS3, for example, to make it run 1:1 with your FSB. So if you overclock your cpu to 300mhz fsb, your ram will be 600mhz (times fsb by 2 since its DDR2).

The OCZ and Geil will probably clock to ~920mhz, and the Ballistix should do over 1000mhz.

And timings matter little on Intel systems.

Thanks for the replies. will the P5B Deluxe allow me to run the memory at 1:1 with the FSB? It not something I gave any thought to.
