Hey all,

I've got a D7200 with a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, and I'm hoping to get a couple of shots at an upcoming family birthday party. I've never used flash before, so I don't know which one to buy, and how to practise. I quite like the look of the LED bars - just have them on and "avoid" having to flash, but I've never seen anyone do this so I guess it's just not a good idea.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Happy to buy grey if that helps any...

Just buy whichever Yongnuo flash that has iTTL and fits your budget (I'd go for a YN565), stick in in auto and point it at the ceiling.

Concur with above. I got a YN565 for my D90 (and D610 now) to start off with.

I got Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Flash" book but struggled with understanding the more complicated chapters. Good book nonetheless.

Thanks very much. That price range is much easier to stomach than £250+ for a Nikon one. I'll get one ordered (and get a diffuser for it as well) and try and practise a little. Hopefully I can get some good shots - it's not a paid or even required shoot, I just hope to get some decent shots that look better than the multitude of camera phone shots that I'm sure will be taken.
