Howzit guys.

Well, I've just installed Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) and must say it's pretty awesome software. However I would like to know a few things.

I was browsing through the Linux gallery and wow, there're some awesome desktops out there. I'd really like to know how do I get those? I heard of a program called, Bryel or something, no idea how its installed or used?

Also as a newbie to all this, what are/ is the most common applications used for new setups must have's ect?

Thanks for all the help!!:D:

First things first.

Go into System/administration/ restricted drivers manager
And make sure its activated.
If it aint then activate it.. A reboot will be required.

Then go into Applications/Add/remove .. look in the top right of that screen and select All Available applications and then type restricted... That'll bring up Ubuntu restricted extras.... install em !!
You can then go into System/Preferences/appearance..... and select visual effects
That should give you the "Jelly windows" etc

I'll leave it here for others to comment now as they will have (good) ideas too.

Hey
Pop on over to gnome-look.org. Lots of nice themes/desktops over there. Your main pieces of kit when playing about with the look of the Ubuntu desktop are:
Emerald theme manager (in System > Preferences > Emerald Theme Manager or something similar)
Compiz Config (as mentioned above, lets you play with the wobbly windows, animations, cube desktop etc.).

Have fun.

Install (in add/remove)

advanced desktop effects settings ( Just type compiz in the search bar)

That'll give you this option....

Screengrab
