Hi folks,

My current PC is a trusty old 2500k with 8gb DDR3 and an R9 290 4gb. It meets my needs perfectly but free stuff is free stuff, and I've been given some rather tasty, if a bit old goodies, which will blow this PC out of the water.

It consists of an Alienware Area 51:

Dell mobo
5930k
32gb DDR3
2x 980 SLI

All in some funky Alienware case which I have no intention of using.

Enter PC 2, an old Origin jobbie:

Corsair Obsidian case
2600k
16gb
GTX 580

I'll be using the Dell mobo with the 5930k, 32gb and the 980s in SLI. Last time I did any real reading about multi GPU setups was when Crossfire and SLI were still new and drivers issues were a serious problem, is that still the case?

Is an 850w PSU enough, or do I need to upgrade?

I'm sure I'll have more questions throughout the process :D

Thanks folks :)

Does that Dell motherboard use standard connectors?
Big brand PCs have had some proprietary crap connectors.

Wtih it being so heavily dependandt on driver optimizations GPU makers have pretty much given up on multi-GPU and anyway DX12 makes it job of game developer to get performance out from multiple graphics cards.

And what's that particular PSU?
850W doesn't mean anything if it isn't quality PSU.

Yep. 850w will be just fine.

Thanks.

It's a Corsair TX850, I think it's 80+ certified, not sure.

While rather good mid level model for the time, in pretty much all cases or in this case PSUs (pun intended) that's quite dated PSU.
And actually first TX version (just 80+) is by now completely outdated...
According to this there have been four different fixed cable 850W TX models and three semi modular:

Corsair loves to sell different PSUs under same naming...
