Hi guys, my friends are getting into EDH and I'd like to build my own deck. I don't really know the most economical way of doing it though. I'm not looking to build a competitive OP deck because that's not fun for my friends, but I do want a strong deck.

I've always liked black cards, so I'm thinking of doing Blue/Black but I haven't been able to find any pre-built EDH starter decks with this combo. What do you think would be the best way for me to amass the cards to do this?

I feel it would be best for me to buy some starter decks and improve them as I learn more rather than rip someone else's deck off the internet and buy all singles. At least, I think that might be the most fun approach, but I'm happy to hear other ideas too.

So really if you guys could point me in a good direction on where to buy the cards and the most economical way to begin amassing them, that would be awesome.

Cheers,

Mumbo

I think the 2014 commander decks were mono coloured, you could start with buying the blue and black ones, playing them against each other for a few games and then see what you like about each deck then maybe combine and build from there?

I've never played EDH myself but planned to get a couple of the starter decks to give it a go

I was wondering if that might be a good starting place, just wasn't sure if it would be a bit expensive given that it wouldn't contain any dual coloured cards. I was wondering if instead it would be better to buy one mono colour and the singles to turn it into dual coloured. Then again, I wouldn't really know where to start with the singles haha.

MTG is quite cryptic when you're trying to work out what all the different sets are about and the different "blocks" that cards come from. I think they're blocks? I'm kind of tempted to buy a booster box and see what happens, it is quite fun opening card packs haha. That might not be very sensible though given that EDH is 1 of each card.

From the few EDH games I've played, it's really friendly and a lot of fun. Nice to play with 2-3 other people with pizza and beer!

I'd suggest a dedicated page for EDH such as https://www.reddit.com/r/edh/ or http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/multiplayer-commander-decklists

You'll find loads of decklists on there and people happy to help you. The thing with EDH is you can spend as much or as little as you want. I would generally suggest avoiding the pre-cons as they're expensive for what you get normally. Also, it's usually your lands that end up jacking up the price of the deck. Look for cheap alternatives to lands e.g. Dismal Backwater instead of Watery Grave, Evolving Wilds instead of Polluted Delta, Drowned Catacomb instead of Underground Sea and you'll see the cost of the deck drop.

If you have an idea about what you want to do (Mill, kill things, counter things, make big monsters etc) then I can probably suggest some cards :)

Pick a general that suits a playstyle you like and then go from there (?). There are also some staples that go in pretty much every deck (Sol ring) that you can immediately add to the list, anyway.

The other theory is pick a general who just has the colours of the cards you want to play and do it that way, ignoring him or his abilities and just using him to play the cards you want to.

You can find a list of most generals within colour combinations and example deck lists here:

There's definitely some fun Dimir generals!
