New to multiplayer gaming

Just starting to play online and did a bit of GTA 4 last night. I was looking at COD4 etc.

One thing is. Is there a ranking / skill matching system for online games otherwise I'll just constantly get my arse handed to me on a plate

There's no common ranking or skill system for all games, but quite a lot of shooters and strategy games have internal ranks. COD4 and COD:WaW have them, but it's mostly a case of just playing a lot and players with higher ranks aren't necessarily actually any good.

Just persevere and keep at it. Don't worry about being killed a lot; everyone starts from somewhere and even experienced players make mistakes.

Got GRID too, but can't get on their servers. Installed via Steam.. I need to get a wheel anyway for that one.

Indeed, Call of Duty 4 has ranks up to 55, but I was top of some servers in the first few ranks. Its more about skill then rank lol. and no the servers weren't empty...

Yeah I went back to BF2 recently and realised that the skill level has somewhat improved since 2005

I would suggest that you just play but of someone is great on every map and you are fed up being killed you can usually spectate this is very handy for getting to know maps.

Usually on a new game I play the same map once it changes map I move server and look for the same map again. Usually being good on a map is knowing where others will go finding a good spot and camping

or you can run and gun but you need to be very good to do that....

If you get COD4 see if there's any 'beginner' servers kicking around, some places do run them, or 'noobs welcome' types - they're usually good to start off on, sometimes has a few higher skilled players on that own a bit, but you find next round they're usually no better than average anyway.

I've had some superb big kill streaks on COD:WaW servers, only to get utterly hammered by the same players on a different map.

There's always a bit of luck involved....

same game. Modern Warfare is the name for CoD4, Modern Warfare 2 is out soon though so don't confuse em as MW2 isnt around yet
