New to Nvidia - What do I need to know?

As per the title I've just installed an MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 after something like 18 years of ATI/AMD cards. Is there anything I should know, tips, tricks, differences from the way AMD do things, software I should be using?

I've got Afterburner and GPU-Z installed and the latest Nvidia Drivers 368.69.

I was intending to stay with the Red Team but the RX480 just wasn't quite enough at 1440p 60Hz to warrant a purchase at this time, whereas the GTX 1070 looks like it will last me some time at this resolution.

I have to say so far the card seems to be built very well and quiet, idling at 37°C. I haven't tried any tests with it yet but I can do requests if you point me in the right direction :)

Only thing you need to know is to grab a Gsync monitor now :D

Lol just need to recover from buying the GPU first ;)

A quick test on BF4 auto settings all Ultra

So far I would say the colours don't seem quite as vivid as on my 7970xf but the 1070 seems a lot faster, smoother and I can seem to hit people with the Scar-H when I couldn't before?! Also runs a lot cooler and quieter. Very pleased so far.

After every(?) driver install, settings which could cause issues reset to default:

  • SLI disables itself
  • The PhysX processor reverts to CPU
  • RGB Colour Range resets to "Limited" from "Full" (Nvidia Control Panel > Change Resolution)
Download Nvidia Inspector, hosted at Guru3D. The Profile Inspector provides dozens of driver-level customization options not found in the Control Panel.
For example, it allows you to force the following to work with many games which don't natively support them: AA (MSAA/SSAA), AO (SSAO/HBAO/HBAO+) and SLI.
A spreadsheet with many of the relevant AA/AO/SLI bits is hosted at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15UvZ6COCpaD8JJkMqB4KMTxBXoEfDuaDiiP--H4BJ-U/edit

+1 on G-Sync too.

Agree that AMD is more vivid, I prefer it tbh but others will probably prefer the Nv profile as they are used to it.:)

You can play about in NVCP and try and adjust the colour profile, off hand I'd recommend opening NVCP and drop the gamma to about 0.8 it made a difference for me-but could be down to my personal choice, no harm trying I suppose.

Turn up the Digital Vibrance if they still have it, as that whats i used to do when i went back to Nvidia from ATi/AMD to get them to look the same.

Agreed with this. These are the settings I used on my Dell TN 1440p 144hz G Sync panel, you may want something different but the digital vibrance really helps!

Vibrance @65! :eek::eek::eek:

I add 5 to vibrance and it just makes the colours pop enough on my X34. For me though, Gsync is a MUST!I couldnt live without it now

I'll give that a go cheers. Some really useful suggestions from everyone, much appreciated. Sometimes not knowing what you don't know is the trickiest bit!

I'm a bit resistant going G-sync or Freesync as I hate being tied to one side or another. I had all AMD systems until my 2500K as at the time there was no competition. If Zen is good I'll happily go back.

I need to look into over clocking not got the foggiest how to do it on Nvidia hardware :p

I've you've just installed an nVidia card into an existing system that used to have an AMD card - might be worth running DDU* to remove any old AMD driver gubbins

* Display Driver Uninstaller

Thanks. I did see someone suggest this so after updating my BIOS I ran DDU in Safe Mode to get rid of all the AMD leftovers. Seems to have worked so far. Really pleased it's working well on my old system:)

Thanks, I've upped the brightness to 60, gamma to 0.8 and digital vibrance to 55% and it looks very nice now. Helps that the screen is glossy with no AG coating so the colours are quite vivid but not OTT now.
