Hi all another noob drifting in from the wastes of supermarket PC's.....:D

The arrival of CoD:Black Ops has caused me to rethink my current setup and overhaul the whole PC (started as a minor upgrade but we all know what happens when that starts?).

Current on XP Pro.......

  • CM Storm Scout case
  • Asus M3N72-D Mobo
  • AMD Athlon 5600+ 2.9ghz (O/C to 3.2ghz) fitted with a Cooler Master V8(not sure on the exact model but it's big!)
  • Some 'generic' 750W PSU
  • Nvidia 9600GT fitted with an Arctic Cooler twin turbo (running core 620Mhz/mem 920Mhz/shader 1500Mhz)
  • 2x 2gb OCZ Gold PC2 8500 (OCZ2G10664GK)
Case, PSU and op system are staying but looks like the OCZ will pay for some good DDR3! All bits on order and Phenom 965 is currently on the AM2 board (had to play) and running at 3.8Ghz (mult @ 17x and bus @ 225Mhz) with latest Asus BIOS (1508)

So new setup will be.....
  • AMD Phenom II 3.4ghz fitted with original Cooler Master V8(?)
  • ASUS Crosshair III MoBo
  • Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SUPER OC 1024MB GDDR5
  • Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

So this weekend (if weather stops wood collecting!) see's me building that lot up and having a play
...and SWMBO has just bought me a 22" 2ms LCD screen for Chrimbo!

Now back to give the existing system another run at BF2......

Cheers,
Paul

Welcome to the forum.

Have you considered using Windows 7 instead of XP? Might be wise. Also don't overlook on the PSU for powering all that nice stuff. I would want some nice clean power for it if it were mine :)

looking good but i would change psu to i mean if some cheap brand then i could go pot any time and you don't want that to happen do you plus it could take your whole system with it ;)

You have a point on the power and I may look into that. This one looks just like the OCUK Swift. What's concensus on recommended PSU's for this sort of setup (with a good cable length)?

Still wavering about shifting to Win 7 and so far just have that on the netbook (Starter) and have a personal fixation with XP LOL. It took me years to be dragged away from 2000 & 3.1

Less said about Vista the better..............tumbleweed seen blowing in from the left....

Cheers for the welcome :)

I have been surfing around and these two units look like more than up to the job for my needs as I have no plans to SLI.

Antec TruPower 650 - http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-117-AN&tool=3
Corsair TX650 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-008-CS&tool=3

Pity I didn't think about this before as I was in a certain emporium in Portsmouth at lunchtime returning a Razer keyboard (who uses a black keypad with the key function printed in black? - reminds me of a certain episode of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?)

Back to the subject of PSU's ......look good?
