Hey all

Well, its the weekend and its raining, so i thought id finally get round to tinkering with my rig i built last year. The system is a Q6600, GeIL PC2-6400 Ultra Low Latency, Asus P5KC, BFG 8800GT 512MB.
Im a complete newb to overclocking, so after reading through the beginner sticky and a Custom pc mag piece on it, i think ive got the jist of things. Ive had a play around with the cpu, only upping it from 2.4ghz to 2.5ghz just to get a feel for it.

The thing im a little stumped with so far is when i increase the fsb to knock the cpu speed up, the ram also goes up with it. I think i read that theres a ratio setting so you don't end up overclocking the ram too much when doing the cpu? or have i got hold of the wrong end of the stick? :) and how far can i push the ram 'safely'. I mean i have a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro on the cpu, but the ram has no cooling on it.

Thanks for any help given to this oc'n newbie ;)

The DRAM Frequency option is the one that lets you mess with the memory speeds. Your memory will probably do 900-920mhz on its 4-4-4-12 stock timings, so set the DRAM Frequency option low enough so that your memory never exceeds 900-920mhz as you raise the FSB.

Cheers, will have a play around this afternoon ;)

Yeah, read that, must have missed the bit about DRAM freq

Had fun with this last night, but could do with a few pointers :)

Ive took the Q6600 to 3GHz and it seems to be stable, 30mins on Prime95 small FFTs, temps hitting around 52c. Only prob i have is when i try to up the memory a bit. Its at 802MHz at the moment, but when i go down to the next ratio of 835Mhz, Prime95 only lasts about 3mins before failing.
Idealy id like to get the memory closer to 900MHz (as Cob, reply 2 said), quite happy with the CPU at 3.0GHz.

Components below if that helps.
Also current bios settings and screens of CPU-Z etc and everything look ok?

Just treated myself to a few extras in getting the most out of my current rig, 2GB more of the GeIL ram, an Akasa Vortexx for the 8800GT and a Akasa System Exhaust Blower. Fitting the gpu cooler within the next few days.

The ram is in and working (total of 4x1GB), but still no luck with rasing it over the 802MHz mark, it keeps failing prime95 anyone have any ideas about that? can post some pics of the bios settings if its helpful rather than the list above

Are you ocing ** 8800GT? I put a Vortexx Neo on my 8800GT oced to 700/1750/2000 and it could not keep it cool. I had to put bak on my Glacier fan I got with the card.

Really? poo. From what ive read in these and other forums is that the Vortexx is much better than the stock cooler (mines a BFG). Will give it a go anyway.

Any help with the ram side of things would be appreciated ;)
