Hi all,

Noob to PC gaming so dont judge me if my questions seem dumb :)

I have just bought i dell G5 gaming laptop which has a Intel i5 8300H CPU.

The base clock speed is listed as 2.3ghz but says it can go to 4ghz.

As there is no bios option to overclock am i right in thinking that the system will automatically speed up the CPU to meet needs using intel turbo boost?

If so, when looking to buy new games am i safe to purchase games that state a cpu speed of say 3.2ghz?

Also can anyone recommend any utilities for me to monitor cpu speed as i play games so i can keep my eye on the speeds?

Thanks in advance

Ian

Hi,
You will be fine. I dont know what the thermals are like on the g5, did you get it with a 1050ti or 1060?

The thermals will determine the max core speed as much as anything else... But it will turbo to well in excess of 3.2 in any case.

You don't overclock per se on that chip btw. It just increases core speed depending on task automatically.

The i5 in that is a good fit for a 1060, youbshould be able to play any games on that at the screen size you have available.

Thanks for getting back to me.

It has a 1060.

Can you recommend a program or overlay for me to keep an eye on clock speed and thermals as I play games?

Sorry I dont really worry about that... Rivatuner is supposed to be good. There are some very good youtube tutorials for measuring cpu usage in games on how to set up overlays.

Yeah. Look for Afterburner and it comes with Rivatuner.

Oh and HWiNFO64 which is great to show temps/speeds in system tray when not playing games (or when playing windowed mode).
