Hiya guys & gals

Im quite new to pc gaming and have really only played Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Farcry 2 up to this point with a little bit of Football Manager 09 thrown in for good measure and I was wondering if you guys could spec me some decent games to go out and buy. Im into most games like FPS and platformers puzzlers etc but not to keen on driving games.

Cheers

Modern Warfare - FPS
Modern Warfare 2 - FPS
Torchlight (RPG - Fun game)
Half Life 2
Batman Arkham Asylum
Dragon Age Origins (In depth RPG)
GTA 4
Borderlands

left 4 dead 2.

come play with us :d

or for sheer value for money CSS. (but will be hard at first while you try and catch up)

I'm thinking about getting L4D2 but I'm wondering a few things

Do you really need to know people who play this game or is it easy enough to jump into someone elses game?

How would it run on my PC? E4600 @ 3.00Ghz - 4GB DDR2 - HD4870 512MB

randoms/pub games are made of fail.

however there are dozens of us at ocuk that play and link runs servers for us to play on.

i only play with ocuk's/friends as i cant stand pubs

Torchlight is cheap at Direct2Drive until midnight, I've bought it but not played it yet. Seems to be strongly recommended as a hack & slash RPG, which seems to be your type, drawing assumptions from your FPS preference. In that field, you can pick up Bioshock & Oblivion as a double pack pretty cheap nowadays.

Dragon Age is much more involved - incredible story, both in quality and contribution to the game's makeup, and definitely recommended if you like strategic battles - there are cheap ways around the game's difficulty, but if you take it seriously you'll spend a good portion of the game paused.

On the RTS front you should pick up Company of Heroes, but I wouldn't sweat the expansions much, and the original Dawn of War is better, in my opinion, than the sequal, especially with the expansions - crucially Dark Crusade.

For space sims you'll want Sins of a Solar Empire for the RTS style and Freespace 2 for space sim awesomeness - a little dated, but there's a thread somewhere which includes details about graphics updates, and if you're disappointed by it I'll eat my own face. I never got in to X3, but you may like that.

Honourable mentions go out to Borderlands and Batman: Arkham Asylum. I'd also keep my eye on Steam for their midweek & weekend deals, they've taken a great deal of money from me over the last couple of months.

Get steam and buy Half Life 1 (its very old but amaizing)

Then buy Half life 2 plus the Episodes

Far Cry 1

GOOOOOOOD GAMES :D

all the Call of Duties

All the Medal of Honors

You should check out GOG as they have some of the classics of recent years for fixed prices of $9.99 and $5.99. Search the site for Far Cry (shooter, precursor to Crysis), Psychonauts (great platformer), Beyond Good and Evil (great adventure/platform game) and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (adventure).

I'd also recommend:

- Dragon Age: Origins. Great roleplaying game and possibly game of the year. Watch out for it on Direct2Drive's download service on 24th December as I think it will be 50% off (£20) then in their holiday offer.

- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. You can't be a PC gamer and not check out one of the biggest series out there. San Andreas would be a great introduction to this 3rd person shooter carjacking spectacular.

- Prey. £4.95 on Direct2Drive is a steal. 1st person shooter and looks and plays great for its age. Overlooked because of other games but very good.

- Tomb Raider: Legend. 2 other games in the new, revamped TR series have been made. Legend's the first one. Looks and plays great, and has the voice of Keeley Hawes (TV's Spooks).

- Mass Effect. The studio behind Dragon Age also made this space role playing game. Equally good, although you may be more at home in Mass Effect as the combat is 3rd person shooterish. Can be bought cheap and Mass Effect 2 will be out in a couple of months.

- Bioshock. Great looking retro-meets-steampunk 1st person adventure shooter with special powers to boot. The story and levels are brilliant and a shocking twist also awaits you. The game of the year of 2007, you can get it for £7 on Amazon.

Bioshock / Oblivion double pack, should still be able to get it really cheap if you look around.

Also Deadspace, absolutely brilliant space survival horror game, available for about 6 quid if you look around.

Portal? FPS, platform and puzzler all in one! :D

The Orange Box would be a good start.

This, get the Orange Box, it's a good kick start to the world of PC gaming or go on Steam as mentioned above and get the Valve collection pack.
