New to RPG's....where to start?

I am looking at buying an RPG for the Xbox 360, but as I've never played one before which title would you recommend as a starter. Also do all RPG's have to be played online as I am not an Xbox live gold subscriber. The graphics look good on the titles I have seen in the shops but you cannot tell from the screenshots or descriptions on them whether they would be suitable for beginners... ie Final Fantasy XIII

Many thanks for the very helpful and honest replies, this was excactly what I was looking for. I bought Final Fantasy XIII yesterday from HMV, the assistant in there was great and really recommeded that I try it out and so far I'm impressed by it. I have always played 1st person shooters in the past but my taste in games seems to be changing hence the search for something different. I've heard others talk about how good RPG's can be but never gave them a try until now. So far FFXIII seems okay and the graphics are fantastic. I've noticed that HMV sell an official game guide too, as I'm new to RPG's do you think it is worth buying it or is it just a way of getting you to part with cash?
