havne't done any of this type of thing before, but thought as my pc sits diong nothing most of the day while i'm at work, i might as well put it to some use.

so, 1st things 1st, do i just download the client from the http://setiathome.berkeley.edu website?

2nd, do i need to play with any specific settings before letting it do it's work or just run it, restart and let it have at it!?

3rd, any other advice?

cheers

hi derv,

cheers for the reply, 1 question/problem though....

i had the BOINC client installed and running from the berkeley main website and that was - seemingly - running ok, but after reading your post about possible problems, i uninstalled it and installed the one from your link, but it wont connect to the local host, should i just revert back to the original client i was using?

cheers

EDIT: please ignore, made a whoopsie when installing!! sorted now i think

woah there folks...remember total noooob to this!! 0% share, 5% share = me no understandy!! where do i set this, as i have both seti & milky way on the go and it seems that milky way seems to be doing more than seti.

cheers for all the help, and sorry for my ignorance

derv, i know i am being a total numpty, but when i do as you say seti is the only one that shows me a 'your preferences' option. when i go to it then i am simple brought to my seti account home page.

maybe i should just delete the milkyway thingy and leave seti on it's own?

might be the easy fix for a noob until i figure out how to work this properly??

Under your account on a project's website there are three types of preferences:

  • Computing preferences
  • Community preferences
  • <project@home> preferences

Of those, it's the last set of preferences you need to change as each one of those is project-specific. Once in there, click the Edit <project@Home> preferences link and change the resource share to the appropriate amount, then click Update preferences. So to change the resource share for milkyway@home, go to the milkyway@home site, go into your account, click on Milkyway@home preferences and change the resource share to 0, then click Update preferences.

Once that's done, you'll need to go into BOINC manager and manually update milkyway@home so that it fetches and uses the new preferences.

ahhhh. damn how did i not see that before...thought i'd been through every option......grrrrrrrrrr, speed reading is clearly not a skill i am good at!!

cheers mate

glad to be a part of something worthwhile.

1 more question though. now that i have changed milkyway sharing, it seem that seti status is continually 'communication deferred' a timer counts to zero then restarts.??
