New to video editing

So basically I have a program from Sky on my DVD recorder on the HDD and I need to get it as an end result onto a DVD in DVD format edited with the ad breaks taken out and maybe a title page. It's a documentary for my wife to show at school.

I'm guessing first step is to copy from HDD to DVD using the DVD recorder, then I can put that into the PC and go from there, trouble is I have no idea where 'there' is!

Can any of you video editing gurus help me!

once it is on the PC you need some editing software
im guessing you are running windows, so you can do basic editing in windows movie maker

adobe premier elements is a good editing package too, more in-depth and you can download a trial of it here : https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=premiere_elements&loc=en_us

Thanks for the reply, yes I'm running Vista.

Given that the source will be in DVD format (so vob files presumably) will the editing software be able to work with this or will I need to rip it to avi/mpeg or something first?

I find people can get the hang of pinnacle studio quicker than premiere. v11 is fairly cheap and can be bought most places in the high street. not sure of a trial though

You're best off ripping the vob files to an avi for editing, some programs can edit the vob but it can be a bit flaky.
