i'm new to vista and have a question why does vista have to take some of the ram for the graphics memory ?

i have a 512mb geforce 8600gt surely that will be enough ?

thanks

just wondered thats all because on the graphics card properties it says

total available graphics memory 767mb
dedicated video memory 512mb
shared system memory 255mb

and thought that the 512mb on the card should be enough and why the need for the extra 255mb ?

yeah it adds more memory on, but if that extra bit is needed by an app it will be dropped. fyi dxdiag shows my vid mem as 2523mb

What does DXdiag say?

Burnsy

dxdiag says approx total memory 752mb

it doesn't seem to effect performance as i'm running 1gig patriot pc6400 ddr 2 ram as i wanted to get the pc up and running but will get a 2 gig kit later on

just wondered why it adds on memory

thanks
