New to Windows 10 & having trouble, blue screen & no internet

I just upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 a couple days ago. I had some teething problems but now there are two problems that are sticking out and causing me issues.

I keep getting these blue screens that says something like 'encountered a problem and needs to restart' the percentage underneath climbs up before it restarts. There's a code at the bottom that says something like NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Once it's restarted I open my browser and it restores the tabs I was on, not sure if that's normal for Win10.

I've tried googling it but the jargon goes way over my head so I thought I'd ask here

EDIT: just had another one, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
EDIT2: And another KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION

Secondly, I have a TP Link wifi dongle which didn't register at all when I plugged it in, no wifi tab in the network & internet section, couldn't figure it out. The next day I downloaded the drivers on another PC and went to install them but as I went through it the wifi tab appeared before I'd even downloaded anything!

Anyway, now when I start the PC it doesn't connect to my wifi straight away. It shows my router name but will say underneath 'no internet'. And after it does the restart mentioned above, it's connected shortly but the web pages start to not load then you see the icon change to 'no internet'. It even disconnects randomly too like I'm just watching a video and it'll buffer and a few seconds later I see the icon change again.

I have to press disconnect, then check the 'connect automatically when within range' or whatever it says button but that's always unchecked again the next time. It doesn't say it's disconnected it says it's connected but that theres no internet which isn't true.

Thanks
Becky

Hi

I’d suggest you probably have a hardware fault. Memory is the first thing I’d check. If you have issues installing W10 then it could be corrupt files but the random restarts would concern me. W10 will restore tabs and such like following restarts as well (I.e. when windows updates have been applied).

Have you installed motherboard drivers? Typically the USB drivers are installed with W10. What hardware are you running?

If you have over clocked I’d revert it back to stock. Then memory test. Then stability test (I.e. running something like prime or heaven benchmarks and seeing how you get on).

Not much help but I do think it’s hardware related.

I installed W10 using USB and haven't overclocked anything yet. I know I need to do something with my memory as it's at 2133mhz instead of 3200mhz, but apparently there's a button I press for that but I want to get this sorted first.

Ryzen 7 3700x
2 x 16GB 3200mhz DDR4
MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
Gigabyte 5700 XT
Kingston 240GB SSD

I had trouble connecting to the internet after installing the OS but I have since done all W10 updates. Looking on the list it says it's installed some AMD stuff. What's memory test is it a W10 thing or something I download? I'll go looking for the motherboard drivers too.

EDIT: I think I have downloaded the MSI drivers as the website has the date I downloaded them next to it.

Turn off fast boot in the power options, it causes all sorts of issues with USB devices not working until you restart the PC, I had the same issue with a USB tv tuner!!! Frikkin annoying that this POS is on by default for the issues it can cause >:(

Thanks! I've turned that off now, is that for the wifi dongle issue?

Was it a clean install by booting from the usb stick or was it a upgrade install from w7?

It was an upgrade from W7 onto my SSD but I deleted the partition so there was nothing else on there

Running the memory test now, it says hardware problems detected. Just waiting for the second pass to finish.

It said I have a memory problem. I thought it might provide a log or something to tell me what to do next but I don't know.

Try your modules in another computer if possible, to see if perhaps there is a configuration problem with your BIOS or if you do indeed have faulty memory modules.

If you have more than one memory module, take all the sticks out and run the memory test one each one until you find out which ones are faulty. If they all come back as faulty, try another slot as one of them might be bad. If they all come back as faulty in another slot, I would be looking at resetting the BIOS to default settings before testing again.

So when I'm testing them individually I'll leave them in the slots they're in first and if I get a bad one try it in the other ones slot incase the slot is bad? You're supposed to keep them in certain slots aren't you, 2 and 4 or something? I don't want to put them in the wrong one and break it

Yes, keep them to the slots they are in - I forgot how they are numbered, but something along the lines of A1, B1, A2, B2 - and you put the memory sticks in pairs, starting with Ax slots.

If you can post your specs, such as make and model of your motherboard, RAM, that would help us to help you!

Okie doke, will start that now.

I just built it this last week, it's:
AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
Viper Gaming 2x16GB 3200MHz
MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
AMD Radeon Gigabytre 5700 XT
Kingston 240GB SSD
EVGA Supernova 850w P2

If it already says hardware problems after a few mins do I really need to wait for the rest of the test to complete?

So both RAM in their slots A2 and B2 have hardware problems
I tried left RAM in A2 on its own and it had hardware problems
I tried right RAM in B2 on its own and no issues
I'm currently doing left RAM in B2 on its own and it has hardware problems

So its dodgy RAM?

Now I've seen your specs, I am wondering if it's just the CPU and/or motherboard being fussy about your RAM, as I do believe the newer AMD processors can be picky about what you use.

I would wait until somebody with more knowledge replies, as I am just making a guess which might be completely wrong.

I didn't even know that so I agree it could be another possibility.
I've just confirmed (well, almost. The best is nearly done) that its the left stick of ram that may be having issues as I'm testing the r9ght ram in a2 with no problems so far so it might be the slot.

But at the same time, if the CPU and/or motherboard are that fussy about ram why are they accepting 1 stick and not the other when they're exactly the same? Or are they just THAT fussy?

I appreciate all your help so far though!

I think there might be something else wrong, I've downloaded GPU-Z and it has the name listed as 'microsoft basic display adapter'. And in HWMonitor the list stops at my SSD there's no graphics listed. In device manager the display adapter is listed as microsoft basic too. Where's my GPU gone?

I tried the driver verifier but upon restart I got blue screen DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED VIOLATION with rtwlanu_old|c/sys underneath

I tried updating the bios but I think it's the current one already.

I also got UNEXPECTED_KERNAL_MODE_TRAP blue screen and it got stuck on 100% so I restarted

Ran memtest64 and after 10mins I looked up and it was gone. Tried again and it finished with no errors after 50 seconds, tried again and it disappeared. Don't know why it's not working for me.

This is all with the 2nd stick of RAM in place. I just want to check other areas incase it's not the RAM or not ONLY the RAM

And the internet keeping going off is killing me, this is all doing my head in

It's sounding more and more like a motherboard problem to me and it would explain why you're getting so many problems.

One more thing to try - very carefully remove the CPU from the socket and check for any bent pins. If it has no bent pins, then make sure you carefully insert the CPU back in and once it's definitely the right way round and inserted into the socket, give the CPU a little press evenly on all four corners to make sure it's all the way home. This might do absolutely nothing, but I don't see what else you have to lose.

After the above, try both memory modules again in their original configuration and see what MemTest brings up.

Aw that means I've got to take the cooler off, that was a bugger to get on too :D would I need more thermal paste when reapplying?

For what it's worth, I checked the pins before I seated the CPU. Do you think they could have bent while in there, or?
