New to Windows 7

What I meant to ask was more along the lines of what sort of tweaks do most people do to their new Win7 install?

For example, my missus' laptop runs Vista & has a totally annoying UAC prompt every time we install anything (unable to turn it off due to some other Dell settings).

-would you leave UAC on in Win7 or turn it off? I mean if I'm gonna do something to my windows I want to just be able to do it & not have to explain myself to the OS every time.

Are there any other things that are gonna wind me up coming from XP?

You can turn UAC off if you don't like it, it's a PIA at times. How do you find vista? It is similar to vista but a lot better. Will take some getting use to as menu's and bits are laid out differently.

I have not tweaked my install as its on a media pc so not used for much otherwise

you don't need to turn off uac, and I recommend you don't. It's far less intrusive than on Vista, and works pretty well. I really don't see the need for tweaks with Win 7 half as much as previous versions, it works pretty well just as is. However, if you feel the need to turn off uac it's pretty simple. Also, be aware that it's no problem to install a 64-bit version these days and you'll have next to no problems if you choose to go down that route...

Vista's ok from what I've seen of it. I guess it's just her laptop that I don't get on with particularly.

To be perfectly honest I would prefer to stick with XP rather than upgrade (think I said that about Win98 too!!) but I wouldn't mind having a look at the fancier directX options now I've got a decent GPU. I also want to use the 8GB ram I bought recently :)

UAC is annoying when setting up a new pc but once most of your stuff is installed it's not that bad.

Agreed, it does serve a purpose so it's better to leave it enabled.

Resist the temptation to go tweaking everything and anything too. It might have worked in XP to improve performance or streamline the OS, but Win7 tends to work better if you just leave it alone. That doesn't mean you can turn off options or the odd service you don't need, but don't go tearing it to pieces as other recent threads on here have suggested; you'll just end up with a broken OS by the end of it.

Cant say I've modified / tweaked W7 at all since installing over a year ago.
It just doesn't need it imo and if anything it gets better with time.

The only thing I've changed is the wallpaper so my advice would be simply leave it alone and enjoy not being on XP anymore.

I think that Win 7 is 10 times better than XP. Once you get used to it, you won't go back!

Your not alone there. I had to go back from Win 7 to XP after my hdd failed, my god it's terrible. lol. Never thought I'd think that of XP. Many times I clicked the start button and started typing 'why's it not working! Ah on XP' :(

I've just moved from XP to 7 64bit....It's easy-er, feels a lot more stable, It's quicker by miles (but I do have the 64bit).....Windows XP? Whats that?......Don't send me back!! ever!!...Please!!!!

If anything, when I "upgraded" from XP to 7 I effectively de-tweaked, so much was not needed, the wallpaper changer, the gadgets, etc, all built in.

Change taskbar settings from "Always combine, hide labels" to "Combine when taskbar is full" and "use small icons". Also replicate XP quicklaunch by making a new toolbar and hiding the labels. Looks like:

Also I've just started using the libraries feature, pretty handy for consolidating multiple locations of media and keeping them indexed.
