New Tomb Raider Announced Runs On Unreal Engine 5

Because it is very easy to use. For example the Frostbite engine is considered to be the best, but very few know how to program it properly - hence the mess that is BF2042 after the old devs left

as long as you can completely remove all the handholding BS then I'm excited.

I will assume it is going to be the same as previous 3 TR games where if you actually want it to be a challenge with no hand holding then turn up the difficulty and enjoy as will turn off any guiding lights and enemy will be a lot stronger and will have to go back to camp site if you die etc .

I'll gladly play a new Tomb Raider with less hand holding and lots of interesting artifacts/mythology bits to discover. Shadow went in the right direction when it comes to exploration but some people thought it strayed too far away from action. It also wasn't that good overall but I generally enjoyed all three games for what they were.

I'd love something like a modern take on TR3, puzzle-heavy with just enough action to keep it interesting and in general just a bit more challenging gameplay.

It's quite simple really, it's to **** on the battery of all the steam fanboys who irrationally hate epic store

I look forward to this game and I look forward to buying it from the epic store
Does anyone have irrational hatred for a game platform? Seems an odd thing to hate

Unreal 5 games look great but they are probably going to be massive in size. The unreal demo alone is 100gb so maybe a full AAA game might weigh in at 500gb+?
SSD tech is going to have to catch up and come down in price

Yeah interestingly I have come across people who do.

I like Steam as its an easy place to keep/launch/buy games but if epic store is offering a title cheaper, then obviously only an idiot buys elsewhere. Also some titles are only available on one store platform or another.
COD Vanguard - for example. Not available currently on Steam (but seemingly most other COD titles are) so I bought from Epic store.

Apparently I can still use Steam to launch the game anyway.

Having said that it's taking forever to download even on a 100Mbps connection.

Why are devs only using unreal engine now days?

Because unless you have your own in-house engine already....you need to add 3-4 years to your development timeline to get an engine built that even starts to come close to feature parity with something like Unreal.

There's a lot of unreal that is bloody awful still, but it's the best of the freely available engines. Snowdrop is miles better to work with, but you can't get that outside Ubisoft!
