There will be a performance difference, thought you meant Crossfire would just fail big time with an Athlon.

Interesting.

Seeing as a Phenom II tends to spank a Athlon II X4 in gaming (20-30% better frames according to the only site I managed to find a games comparison on - not exactly one of my normal trusted sites though ) I wonder how that would impact scaling?

There doesn't seem to be any decent modern articles, showing the effect of various cpu's in a crossfire situation.
