Boys and their toys eh.
Just had what I think will be the finishing touch to my camera bag, one of these:

400mm%20EF%20F5.6%20L%20USM.jpg

I've recently been to a number of events including and air display, falconry display and motorsports where my F4 70-200 simply wasn't long enough, even with a 1.4x convertor.
Hopefully this will solve the problem, whilst probably improving upon the image quality of my zoom. The combo of the 400mm and the 1.4x convertor certainly sounds like an interesting option.

As a lens, looks lovely, has a wonderfully smooth focusing ring, and comes with it's own carry case.
BTW, thanks to everyone who recommended Kerso as the best place to source from. Easily the best price I've seen and got it here substantially faster than I expected.
Just need to get it home from the office without being mugged.

Nice. What body are you using it with? You'll lose autofocus with the 1.4x on it on anything other than a 1 series body.

A 70-200 and a 400mm prime sounds like a nice combo to have but I'll stick with the 100-400mm until I can afford / am able to lift the f2.8 versions.

The good news is that my body is a 1 series. My 1.4x is a Kenko unit, which I'm told allows AF to work. The 70-200/1.4x combo certainly retained AF, and did pretty well even with a fast moving falcon (bird, not plane).

I did consider the 100-400, but get the impression that telephotos are the way to go at that length.

The 400mm is one of the F5.6 models, which is about a 1/4 of the price of it's bigger brothers and massively lighter. Having said that, still dwarfs the 70-200.

Just one question for you guys. I'm looking at this lens thinking "that ain't going to fit in my existing bag".
From checking through the "what's in your bag" thread, the Lowepro mini-trekker appears to be well recommended.
Assuming you wanted to fit a Canon 1D, 70-200, 50mm, 400mm F5.6, Tamron 28-75, 430ex flash and some spare batteries in a bag what would you recommend?

Have you spoken with a Miss Poppins?

Buy a donkey imho ;)

nice lens, look forward to seeing some pics!

The crumpler december quartet would possibly fit all your gear - fits all mine but then my biggest lens is a sigma 100-300 with hood.
