My trusty Samsung LE40A656 is staring to give up the ghost and I need to start looking into a replacement.

I am a bit out of touch with TV technology and was wondering what I should get (or indeed look out for avoid).

Budgetwise, I am looking at about £450-£550 (a little bit more if really worth it).

Any recommendations or advice would be much appreciated.

That budget won't get you anything even slightly good tbh. It restricts you to basically the cheapest sets available and nothing more.

Spending £600-£900 will get you a mid or even mid to high end tv nearer the £900 budget.

or if you can push out a bit more then this

it's the difference between knowing what good HDR is to sub par HDR to no HDR at all at your original quoted budget.

I would get this:

Sony KD49XF8577

It's a VA panel for those deep blacks and can do 120hz according to: https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/3243115b

The Sony 49" XF9005 which is the next model up for about £1000 is probably the best performance for that screen size, but obviously costs quite a big more.

If you are not fussed about 60z refresh rate, then the 49" Samsung NU8000 is probably better value.

Thanks for that - I realised that my original budget was a bit low and am very tempted by the 55U7A mentioned above - seems to get a lot of very favourable reviews on the AVForums.

Are Hisense really that poor and is the 55nu8000 that much better? Based upon the above, I need to know whether the £150.00 odd quid is really going to be a worthy update.

No, I don't think the £150 extra is worth it IMO. And I read a couple of reviews on that 55nu8000 that mentions motion issues, so that would be a definite no from me.

No I don't believe they are - for whatever reason some people seem to have too much of an Agenda.

If you read the majority of owners threads on AVForums, there are issues with almost all TVs from all manufacturers (Even the likes of the Sony mentioned above can suffer from backlight bleed etc).

From my current personal experience with John Lewis, then I wouldn't consider buying another TV from them - Richer Sounds would likely be my choice of retailer, or even a more generic retailer such as ao.com or amazon

I've got a hisense 47" 4K TV and seen a few around, I can't really fault the quality on it.

Not really any difference between mine and the 4K Samsung in the office at work which was almost double the price.
