hi there lads i am looking at a new tv as my old one hads just gone faulty basically i dont want to spend a huge amount and was just looking for a 2nd opinion on which you lot would recommend.

the minimum size is 37" and would stretch to a 45" or possibly higher if the price is worth it looking at spending around £600 less is preferable. Just wanted your thoughts on which make and possibly a model if you can find one.

Also wanted your thoughts on going for a full hd or just hd ready and the differences and what contrast ratio is good for a tv my monitor is 50000:1 but dont really no if tvs should be higher or around same rate.

many thanks for your time lads and a fast reponse would be appriciated as i am thinking of popping down to get one now

(feel free to move my post this topic seemed most relevant)

If you're going for 37"+, make sure it's full HD. Most of the time, you wouldn't notice it on anything smaller than that, but when you start getting to those sorts of sizes, I'd definitely recommend 1080p.

Contrast ratio means nothing. The "50,000:1" you've seen is dynamic contrast ratio. That means that they use dimming and brightening the backlight to achieve it. On a typical CCFL-backlit TV (the most common/cheaper ones), you'd never get the full 50,000:1 at once, more like 1000:1. However, if you were to get an LED TV with local dimming, contrast ratio DOES matter then, because it can darken or light up different areas of the screen, whereas CCFL backlights can only change the entire screen. Don't get confused between the thin LED TV's and local dimming ones though. Thin LED TV's, like the Samsungs, use edge-lit LED's, which don't dim in different areas. I doubt you'd get an LED TV for <£600 anyway though, so don't worry about that.

Anyway, that's all I can input, I haven't kept up on the leading LCD's right now.
