Hi there

Looking to get ourselves a new TV within the next month or so and wondering if any of the experts in this forum can point me in the right direction - this is what am looking at:

Toshiba "42XV505" 42ins full HD Freeview LCD TV

Resolution 1920x1080. Contrast ratio 15000:1. Brightness 500cd/m2. 3 HDMI sockets. 2 SCART sockets. Active vision LCD picture processing. Progressive scan. Nicam stereo. Digital text. 8-day EPG. Wall-mountable (bracket not supplied). H 27.3, w 39.7, d 12.1ins

It's coming in at £999.00

It'd be mainly used for the PS3, upscaling and Blu Ray on dvd's.

whats your veiwing distance?

I would highly recommend a plasma. I got the Panasonic 37PX80 this week and its stunning!

Is the toshiba 24p and 100hz?

I wouldn't worry to much about the resolution as its mostly marketing & makes no difference at 9 feet vewing distance.

I would look out for sets with 24p, 100 hz, quality contrast ratio and blacks over 1080p hype.

If movies are a main part of your viewing then plasma is a far better choice than LCD. General all round superior picture quality, and don't worry about 1080p unless you sit within 5-6ft of the tv.

Parents have the previous model tosh and it has soo many annoying traits, horrific sky/freeview quality (I mean reaaaly bad), motion blur during footie and films, vertical banding.

Check out the new panasonic PX80 range or the new PZ range if you really want 1080p. The specs listed don't means jack, especially contrast ratio and LCD picture processing crap.

Have a butchers over at the plasma area at www.avforums.com. I owuld only recommend an LCD if you use it heavily as a PC monitor. Plasma screenburn isn't an issue with gaming and watching movies, and SD picture quality is far superior to LCDs.

Most impotantly find a place that will help you setup the tvs and compare them with tv footage, upscaled dvds, and blu rays of your choice. Don't try all these competitors etc as 99% of advice in there is rubbish and their tvs are all setup really really badly. A different competitor is a better bet, but watch out for salesman talk !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies (and the links) guys - so your saying Plasma is better than LCD?

Excuse my ignorance here but whats the difference? Our viewing distance is going to be within 8 feet if thats any use.

Go out and look - you cannot make any purchase based on forums.
I watch SD television, HD television, Upscaled movies and Bluray - also a little PS3.
I went LCD and I'm happy I did.

I would still say that the picture quality on my television is every bit as good as a Plasma with only true blacks slightly suffering.
But after saying that I'll be told that all of the specifications of my LCD TV are actually BS, don't mean anything etc.

Go and see them in the flesh.
