My Panasonic GT30 has been in for repair for a month but has now been classed as beyond economical repair. I will get an offer of like for like replacement but since there isn't really many plasmas about now I will probably go for the voucher option and choose my own set.

I'm out of the loop of what is good but have heard good things about the Sony sets and I'm considering the KDL55W8. Is there anything better in the £800 to £1000 range; must be available from John Lewis?

With that budget I would be very tempted by the W8. Watched one for quite a while in RS. The VA panel is awesome. Even in a brightly lit store, I could see the black difference between the W8 and an LG that was next to it. The consistency is top notch as well. It's a magnificent TV imo, and you're not going to get a much better 55 inch with 5 year guarantee for £799.

Sounds good. John Lewis have just phoned and offered a Panasonic Viera TX-42AS740 but if I accept that it will count as a continuation of my previous purchase. Or I can have £700 credit and if I top up it counts as a new purchase with a new 5 year warranty. No brainer really. Will go for the W8 for another £100 and get the new warranty.

The Samsung looked good but settled on the Sony in the end. Picked it up earlier and got it up and running. So far quite impressed, haven't done any calibration yet but colours don't look too bad out of the box.
