I have only been riding a few years so my experience on which tyres to go for or avoid is little.
Currently fitted on my 2001 FZS 600 Fazer are Avon Storm which seem pretty good. Are these a good medium between grip and wear? I use the bike for commuting mainly. Any suggestions welcome.

Angel GTs
PR3/4
M7RR

Won't go wrong with any of those, out of the 4 the M7RRs are a little more hooning biased but still good all rounders.

PR4 and the Metzeler Roadtec 01's (I think?) are rated highly but not cheap.... I run M7RR's all year round and ran the M5's before that.

Commuting through all weather? Pirelli Angel GT.

M7RR if you want something a bit more sporty and less touring biased. I watched revzilla's review of them the other day, never realised they were designed for the IOM TT, so going very fast in all conditions, sun and rain.

Pilot road 4's are what I've used since I've tried them. I all year round commute and summer hoon

This for me too. I asked about tyres before Xmas and was a regular PR2 user. The PR4's are seriously good tyres. I do 60 miles a day in all weather and they offer fantastic wet grip. Yet to summer hoon them as lat summer I was on PR2's. The PR4's are also wearing really well. I only have experience of PR2's and now 4's so can't speak for other suggestions but I was told out of all the top 3 or 4 suggestions you really can't go wrong.

I put 4000 miles on a pair of Pilot Road 4 through all weather riding (including snow) and could not fault them in the least. I'd expect someone to get 6000 odd miles out of a pair on a Fazer 600. I did however change bike so cannot offer a direct comparison, but swapped over to a pair of Dunlop Roadsmart 3 based on an array of review materials into all round tyres for the 2016 season. It's difficult for me to compare both tyres directly due to the change of bike as well, but I have to say I do find that they offer what seems to be fractionally better grip whilst out in the cold or wet than the Pilots did. The longevity of the tyres is about the same as what I got from the Pilots with a comparable mix of hooning and steady riding on both sets. I'd recommend either of these for commuting and that you go for the cheapest pair of the two as they're both absolutely blinding to say the least, and are both absolutely superb in persisting rain as well.

The life of both sets is pretty rock solid when compared with the Rosso 2's which I got through on both bikes within 1400 miles.
