New tyres needed, want to avoid BMW's price tag...

... so my recent trip to the 'ring has now got a little more expensive, as BMW confirmed today that my two rear tyres are very close to illegal and need replacing (I also damaged my bumper (on the car park, not even the 'ring itself, how glamourous eh?) which they want £700 to replace, may leave that a while!), and they want £289 per corner for some new Continentals. The only alternative they had to offer was some Michelins which run about £100 more per corner.

Now I've had a look about on **** and there are a few people selling whole sets of slightly-used 19" alloys, complete with tyres, for about £1,200! There's also people selling tyres for about half BMW's price, albeit slightly worn with a tread depth of 6mm as opposed to the 8mm when new. So, I could get tyred-up alloys and sell on the alloys, or save effort and just get tyres, but is there anything to be wary of with buying wheels/tyres in this way, any common pitfalls or anything? I've never really used **** so apart from checking feedback don't know what to look out for.

What size tyres? Surely buying the tyres online or getting a local tyre fitters to match online prices is the way to go.

Hrm I figured being an M3 they'd need to be 'special' in some way, is this me being a bit silly and buying into the whole 'M3-ness' of it all a bit too much?

p.s. i'm going out now with a torch to get sizes...

Never realised that BMW made "special" tyres that werent available in any tyre garage in the entire country to anyone who owns a different make of car.

They may well be a "special" spec for BMW's but you'll be able to get them from most tyre places.
Usualy it's run flats that are made specificly for BMW's in certain sizes, but it doesn't stop them being fitted on other cars.

Just get 4 decent tyres from a reputable specialist - Continental Contisport Contact3, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A, Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric etc.

Or Michelin Pilot Sport 2 if you want to set fire to loads of money for no performance benefit, or Falken FK452 if you want to cheap out and convince everyone they are '*** ubar' to make yourself feel better :p

I'm considering the Falkens myself, they do seem popular on Z4 forums, especially since they're half the price of the others Fox mentions. About £320 for a set for a Z4 on 18's, you can imagine the price of the others....

edit: are there any run flats that don't cost a fortune and don't hamper the ride like Bridgestone Potenza RE050A's?

Push the boat out and get some Linglongs...

*Disclaimer, most of the other suggestions in this thread are much better than the above. Go to your local independant tyre place and haggle*

Thank you all for the sage advice, I have screwed my sane head back on now. Also instead of going out to check tyre sizes I went and watched 'Wanted' at the flicks, it's worth a viewing, not least for Angelina Jolie who looks stunning in it, and a few very cool sequences.

I just saw that, I can’t say I was that impressed, I was expecting it to be much better.
However I made a killing off that movie as the production company gave us a huge contract to do the satellites on the locations which basically paid for my car
:D

Hah awesome, nice one! Yeah the underlying premise of the thing is *utterly* retarded, and just has to be ignored, it's no wonder there's no mention of it whatsoever in all the advertising

what are Falken FK452 really like as i was planning on buying 4 of these??

Not as good as tyres costing twice the price......

( Comparing my old 18in Bridgestone Potenzas to FK 452's when I had my e38, they wear quicker too.)

What size?

255/35/R18 and 225/40/R18

I haven't needed tyres yet but I have also heard about so called "waiting lists" for the Bridgestone runflats. Quite why anyone would want them that bad is beyond me because whilst they're okay in the dry, their wet performance leaves a lot to be desired.

Also how did you damage the bumper? While I was with you? Or some other car park?

No much earlier in the day driving off the big dirt-surface car park by one of the corners of the 'ring, drove over a big ditch instead of around it. Only a little crack mind
