New UEFI Machine W8.1 - Backup or image

With new machines with UEFI/W8.1 that don't have install disks and you can't make them from the machine. Do you make and image or rescue disk?

On the laptop I've just set up with 8.1 the rescue disks are 12GB and image about 30GB. How do you manage this? Do have spare disk or flash drive you dedicate to storing these. As DVD's are no longer a (practical) option.

I'm just wondering if a disk dies in the laptop and I replace it how do I get back the OS, except via an image etc.

Image to USB flash drive or download an ISO to re-install.

Where do you get the licence key if there's stick on the machine. Is it in the BIOS?

It is embedded in the BIOS , but I had to try 3 or 4 versions of the Win 8 ISO to get one that the key would work with

Out of curiosity what were the versions you tried. I am this one is windows 8 64 not pro.
