Ive considererd sooo many options at the moment, and i just keep going back and forth to different ideas and setup.

What do you think of this?

Its mainly goign to be used for gaming, but a reasonable amount of photoshop/dreamweaver type applications, which is why i've gone for the quad core and not the dual cores.

It obviously goes without saying I want the best kit for my money, the fastest ram, the fastest cpu but if I was looking to spend around £800-£1000 im sure i could get quite a good setup for this.

any suggestions for further improvement?
btw, the graphics card is irrelevant for me at the moment, as im planning on getting one of the ati 4xxx range cards in 2/3 months time.

you could save yourself some money by buying a p182 and a corsair 520 as 1000w power supply isnt really needed. Unless you are planning on overclocking the cpu past 3.6Ghz you dont need the 8500 ram, some 6400 will do fine. Could also just buy the cheapest 8800GT to save a little bit more

kearney, whats the main difference between the ram then? I dont tend to overclock, but wondering why the slower ram would be suitable?

Ram is linked to your FSB (front side bus) of your CPU, im guessing the FSB of the Q9450 is around 300Mhz with a multiplier of 9 to give 2.7Ghz (300x9)

The ram has a multiplier of 2 so 300Mhz x 2 = 600Mhz which is still slower than 6400C4(800Mhz)

Sorry about that poor explanation...im not the best with words :)

I will warn you that ive heard that the raptors are not exactly quiet

Ive heard good thing and reviews about the new samsung F1 drives tho. Cheaper, quieter, more storage and almost as fast

well, to be honest, I dont think i would mind the noise that much (i will look into this noise thing), but the difference btween 7000rpm and 10000rpm is ment to be well worth the difference.
I have considered solid state, but its just too expensive atm.

id suggest reading around in the hard drive section before taking the plung £220 is a lot to spend on hard drives especially for 300Gb. Do you really need the speed of the raptors in raid 0?

Lee

drop the raptors to something like the western digital 500gb AAKS's, then get a decent after market cooler for the processor, which you dont appear to have on you're initial spec shown.

Whats the difference between the p31/p35/x38/x48/ chipset motherboards?
Are the x38/48 motherboards suitable for the chip above? is there any benefits?

Thanks for the info so far :)

You're paying atleast £100 more than you need to regarding the hard drives. Like someone said up there, get a Samsung F1 drive, they're are literally just as fast, maybe slightly slower, but that extra £100 could go towards a better processor/cooler/graphics card to give you much better overall performance.

ok, you've twisted my arm. I've updated it again.
i've also changed the CPU from quad 2.4 to Quad 2.8.

Do you think its worth the extra £100?

going to go back to the Q9450 and may consider overclocking this slightly in the future (i cant see a need right now).

I think ive made my mind up for now lol :)

thanks very much guys, most appreciated.
I havent listed one yet, im not sure what is good at the moment, but the last one I purchased was one of the orange zalman mushroom looking ones, a bugger to fit, but good none the less :)

is that the best ram in the 6400 range? id happily pay an extra £50 or so for quicke ram.
The OCZ reaper appears to have lower timings?
