New/Upgrade PC Build Advice

Hi all,
I've had what seems like a video card failure in my current system, the MSI R9 290 Gaming 4G starting giving me artifact and windows crashing..
I then went and purchased an Gigabyte RX5700, but my old CPU/Motherboard is now a bottleneck, to what extent I'm not 100% sure.

My current PC:
Amd FX 8350
Asus M5A99X EVO 990X Socket AM3+
G.Skill 8GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX
PSU: 730w BeQuiet

Question is... should I build a new PC now or maybe see what will release later in the year, how big is the the bottleneck really?

I've had a look and the below build is something that I have identified so far.. I do a bit of everything on the PC, work, Game, and file server for the house.
Any thoughts on the components will be welcomed. I'm not sure on the case, I would prefer a Mid sized case, but I need at least 4*3.5 drive bays.

Hi,
You would be better off grabbing a b450 max board unless you plan on using pcie4 ssd and will be moving a lot of data around. Maybe a new psu also depending on what you have currently.

If set on x570 then the gigabyte aorus boards are very good and have UK based support.

Thank you for the response, I was looking to future proof a bit with the x570 board. My current PU is an BeQuiet 730w, I think that will be fine. I will look at the Gigabyte board.

While that psu will be fine in terms of wattage upgrading to a good gold unit is a good idea especially when spending a lot on other new components.

That PSU was outdated design and low end already when new.
And more like 650W when counting 12V output and crossload regulation challenges of such old design.

Bitfenix Formula/Corsair TX would be like starting level.
Form fully modular PSUs with 10 year warranty Phanteks Amp is best priced at the moment:

Unless having firm plan for upgrading CPU to 12/16 core X570 boards aren't really necessary.
Though if you're wanting like half dozen year usage life without complete overhaul that CPU upgrade would be good to do when when improved Zen3 CPUs go to discount after release of Zen4.
Maybe by then PCIe v4 would start giving some percents of advantage in games.
For Windows/game loading times even PCIe v3 NVMe isn't much use over SATA.

Though X570 boards have weak point: Active chipset cooling with fan.
And Asus just double facepalmed there by putting that chipset cooler precisely under graphics card to be bathed by its heat.
If you have non-blower cooler high heat output graphics card that can cause sweaty chipset temps, especially when weather and room warms.
Gigabyte used lot more sense in designing chipset cooler of X570 Aorus Elite.
(MSI has the best X570 chipset coolers, but VRMs suck being copypastas from £100 B450 boards)

Thanks for the reply, so you suggest I wait until the Zen 4 is released before I purchase the 3700x?
I normally keep my machine 5 year plus, that's why I thought about the X570 board.
Noted about the power supply, I've never had issues with mine, I will have a look at the suggestion though, just trying to not spend too much in one go.

3700X is two generations outdated when Zen4 arrives, because Ryzen numbering is one ahead of architecture with Zen+ in between original Zen(1) and Zen2.
3700X is huge update from that old "Faildozer" and well priced now.

If wanting maximum usage life before next full upgrade 12 core Zen3 would be best.
Those arrive apparently later this year/during winter putting current Zen2 into discount and then themselves going into discount year or so later with arrival of Zen4 and DDR5 platform.

Ok thank you. The 3700 get's near enought double the frames.. I'll need to decide if I can wait for the new Zen 3 release then.
Any thoughts on the Memory I had in the basket?

Answer is... yes. MSI Tomahawk Max (ATX) or Mortar Max (mATX), 16 GB DDR4-3600, Ryzen 3700 or 3900, and a new PSU.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £598.05 (includes shipping: £11.10)

The next generation of Ryzen CPUs aren't likely to be a vast improvement on the current ones and - most importantly - they're not available right now.

Thanks for you suggestions, so you also would rather go for an B450 board. The 3900x is a little bit pricey..

what do you think x570 will provide that b450 won't?
(if you say pcie-4, you haven't done your homework)
No, not for now and very probably not the future either, but I'll keep this machine for the next 5-8 years, so would try to get as much as possible (afordable) if I can. There is also the USB 3.2 and 10GB LAN on some, but don't need that now.

You could snag a cheap 3600 now then jump to a 4700x next year rather than waiting. The 3600 is still a very good chip and there would be very little difference over a 3700x for gaming.

It's a fantastic time to build a PC to be honest, at least as far as the core components go. We've not had access to such a good range of well priced CPU's for better part of a decade.

The only area that falls short is the GPU market imo, but given you have a 5700 you're sorted in that regard anyway.

@Quartz gives a really good suggestion with his 3700X build, although you could drop down to a 3600 to save some money as suggested by @Joxeon.

As for the memory you had in the basket, I'd say that the Patriot Viper recommended above is a much better buy right now.

Thank you all, the 3600 is a good alternative and will definitely meet my requirements. I might just go for that and buy new M2 storage as well.

The suggested cooler Scythe SCFM-2000 FUMA 2 Dual Fan CPU Cooler - 2x120 mm is not currently in stock.. so will need to look at alternative.

I do have an HYPER 212 EVO in my current system, will that not be ok?

My current Basket looks like this.
Not sure about that cooler.
