im hopeing to upgrade from intel core 2 duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz 2.67GHz to a quad, im just wondering if any of you guys can give me some advice, im thinking about, (intel quad q8800) (intel core quad q6600/8m cache, 2.4ghz 1066MHz FSB) (intel core 2 quad q9650/12M Cach, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB), was thinking about the i7 as it's roughly the same price, as the intel core 2 duo, but i would have to change the mb and the ram to take the psu, as the mb is on a 775 socket, so thats out of the question, last choice is to over clock the intel core 2 duo E6750, but never done any overclocking before, all games like crysis, battlefield, call of duty, i can play at full spec and runs sweet, but the most favorite game i play is flight sim 2004 and fsx, sad old git, i know, which is the reason for the upgrade i get a short stutter every now and again in the game, thanks for any help

Hi there and welcome to the forums :)

First things first, do you have the option to install 64 bit windows 7? - as with your current arrangement you won't be able to adress all of your memory (32 bit can only access 4GB and that includes graphics card memory).

My next suggestion is to definitely try overclocking (though you would be wise to invest in an aftermarket cooler like this), with the P5Q-E motherboard, an E6750 and a decent cooler this should be an absolute breeze.

If you still find you need more performance after overclocking the E6750 as far as possible then I would suggest buying a second-hand Q6600 (G0 version) - and overclock this too.

The Q8000 and especially Q9000 are good chips - but they are usually nowhere near as cheap as a Q6600 (second hand) and from retail they cost far more than they are worth. Hence, the Q6600 is the best bet for a quad core upgrade (unless you can find a Q9x50 series chip for a good price second-hand).

OverClocking that chip to 3.2GHz should help!

  • 8 x 333 = 2664MHz
  • 8 x 400 = 3200MHz

The games you mentioned aren't multi-core cpu optimised and wouldn't give much improvement with a quad core. They would definitely see an improvement with a faster cpu though!

As said above, overclock the cpu as far as you can - if that doesn't satisfy you, save up for a new i5 750/i7 9x build or wait for the new sandy bridge/bulldozer cpu's.

hello, and merry christmas.Well finally got around to buy a second hand intel core extreme QX9650 and its running sweet, got 64bit OS now, and 2xtimes 1tb sdd, for raid config as well.Im now going to upgrade the ram to eight gigs, can anybody please suggest, decent and fast ram for the asus mb
thanks
