Hi I have just upgraded my system to..
Antec 1200 case. Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU cooler.
Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz RAM
Crucial SSD MX100 512 GB . 500 GB HDD. 1200W PSU.
Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 motherboard.
Skylake Core i7 6700K CPU .

I spent an age getting everything updated to windows 8.1.
Microsoft seems to want me to get windows 10 free upgrade via
Media creation toolx64
This downloads windows 10 starts installing media..something..
then just goes with no warning ..no windows 10 upgrade??
How else am I going to achieve upgrade to windows 10?

Download the ISO file using the W10 download tool and either burn it to disk or USB stick.

once done click on the setup.exe and see if this runs?

I try that later. I had no problems before I had the icon appear then just updated through that. Will I get that same icon perhaps in a few days?

when using download tool won't I be asked for product key for windows 10? This I will not have. Will the 8.1 key work?

To my knowledge, you just need to use your current 7/8 key for the 10 installation, but don't quote me on that.

You could back everything up, do a clean install of Windows 8, then do the upgrade to 10. I would do that as a last resort but that should work without any problems.

the download tool doesn't ask for the product key, W10 install asks twice but you skip this and once online W10 activates by hardware ID so a key is not required.

this will only work if your current OS is activated and then upgraded to W10 which then should activate once the upgrade is done.

after this is done you can create a USB bootable stick with W10 on and do a clean install, skip the two stages which ask for a product key and once online it will activate fine.

All sorted thanks. Just downloaded the iso file of windows 10 right clicked pressed mount ran set up all went well.

Glad its fixed, noted this - I've not had this issue before, but its useful to know this worked (I'll be upgrading all the family to Win 10 when I see them all at Christmas, no doubt... )
