New Vengeance stick causes reboot cycle

Hi all.

I have a fairly old but capable Mobo / CPU set up that I will be upgrading as soon as I have seen off a few other financial priorities. Basically, I was running 2 x 2gb Corsair XMP3 sticks until memory channel B gave up the ghost. Running with just 2gb was causing reliability issues with the system and frequently maxing out the memory so I bought a single 4gb stick which has restored my machine's performance and managed to "paper over the cracks" until I'm in a position to update the motherboard and CPU.

Given the vast improvement provided by the extra couple of gig, I wanted to double the memory again so invested in a Corsair Vengeance 8gb DDR3 1600mhz stick. I removed the 4gb stick and replaced it with the 8gb and my machine simply gets stuck in a reboot cycle. It posts with a single beep as per normal, displays the screen where I have the option to go into BIOS but before BIOS opens the machine has quietly switched off only to restart and repeat the process ad nauseum. Reinstalling the 4gb stick returns the machine back to how it ran before.

Is there a trick I am missing here or is the memory stick basically goosed?

Thanks in advance!

CPU: iCore i3 2.93ghz O/C'd to 4ghz
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H F4

That motherboard has a max memory of 16GB so I suspect only supports 4GB per slot.

If Channel B is broken you can put 2x4GB in Channel A.

Andi.

Hi Andi thanks for your rapid reply. That did work once when I tried it but subsequent attempts have failed, giving me the rapid beeps followed by reboot cycle which I get when I use one of the B channels. Each one of the 2gb ram sticks worked in each one of the A Channel slots on their own, but installing 2 sticks in any of the slots at the same time results in the rapid series of beeps and restart.

Weird, huh?

Take off the OC

Just for interest I thought the multiplier was locked on i3's?

This was bought as an overclocked bundle from OCUK just under 5 years ago. It's an i3 530 and has lasted well, overclockable from 2.93ghz up to 4.4ghz and still managing to handle everything I throw at it although the memory slot issue has caused headaches although that's now temporarily cured with the 4gb stick until I can carry out this long awaited Mobo / CPU upgrade.
