I just bought 2 of these VGA cables to upgrade from 2 of the samsung ones that came with my monitors as a needed longer cables. Since swapping the cables the monitors show up as generic non-pnp instead of Samsung Syncmasters and the max resolution available is 1600x1200 instead of 1920x1200. Catalyst control centre shows the monitor type and max resolution as 'fake'. What's happening? Is there a problem with these cables? Why don't they allow the monitor to report its info to the GFX card? Any help appreciated.

I had this problem recently with a new monitor and a VGA cable. No matter what I did, it was picked up as a generic non-pnp monitor with a max res of 1600x1200 (when it should have been 1920x1080). I eventually tried replacing the cable and it worked fine, so presumably there was something wrong with the first cable- perhaps this is the case with you too?

There is a dedicated pin on the connector that provides config/hardware info to the card/windows. (DDC springs to mind?) If the pin isn't connected on your new cables then that's probably why the screen isn't identified correctly.

Try a different cable if you can (preferably a branded one to be sure ?) to see if that makes a difference.

(edit: Info on the DDC channel(s) can be found here. http://www.epanorama.net/documents/pc/vga_bd15.html - May be worth checking those pins are connected at both ends if you have a suitable tester/multi meter? )

Swapped the cables again, back to the original Samsung ones that came with the monitors. Both screens straight back to 1920x1200. Guess the new cables just aren't up to the job.
