Hello!

What I am after is a new graphics card for my PC. I am currently using a BFG 7900GTX but it is showing its age with my 22" screen. I was tempted into the 260 range but I am not really sure.

I am currently running:

AMD X2 4400+ S939
2GB DDR400
DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLI-D

Is a card like the 260 going to be limited by the CPU/RAM?

I am looking at a card around £200 but I would love some examples of cheaper and more expensive cards to!

Thanks for any help.

I would go for either the 4850 or the 4830 with that set up.

Avoid spending £200, not worth it to e honest. 4850 will be a great jump from what you have anyway.

Does the 4780 work on his motherboard? That is only PCIe 1.0 or 1.1 unless I am mistaken. I wasn't aware this card worked on these baords. Be good if they do as I might get one for my DFI SLI-DR.

Normally the specs are largely backwards compatible so i'd imagine it will be fine.

If you can find a 260 for a good price then i'd certainly consider it along side the 4870. It's a good competitor to the ATi card, overclocks well and runs quiet.

In fact the standard GTX 260 (192sp version) would be more than acceptable and can be picked up fairly cheap 2nd hand. I actually find it's performance smoother with better minimum framerates when compared to my old crossfired 4850 set up.

TBH though you'd be perfectly happy with either.

Incidentally, what operating system are you using?

I'd be more tempted to buy new rather than run the risk of getting a faulty card etc.

Currently running Windows XP Pro SP3 but could be tempted into running Vista. Not sure how great it would be for gaming really in Vista with just 2GB RAM.

Mostly playing WoW at the moment but that is mostly because of problems with my 7900GTX. Lots of artifacts etc, needs to be RMA'd but can't do without the card! *grins*

Would love be play Farcry 2 and CoD 5 on decent settings. Running 1680x1050 so the 7900GTX is struggling a bit.

Thanks

Don't worry - i've RMA'd a couple of 2nd hand cards in my tuime with no problems at all.

Just make sure you either keep in touch with the seller or get the receipt. Even if it's not under your name you could still say it was a birthday present (or similar) so wasn't bought by you but is yours. :)

Something like a BFG or EVGA card would be ideal with their long 10 year warranties.

No not much - certainly not enough to notice since your CPU will possibly hold you back a touch anyway.

With a single card installed in the top slot of the SLi-DR runs at 16x which is perfectly fine for the card.

That really shouldn't be a concern - you're willing to spend £200 on a new graphics card, so you *really* shouldn't have any quarrel with spending £30 on another 2GB ram!
