A few days ago we got a virgin media letter through the door with details on a new bundle i can get, and im just wondering if anyone else has got a similar thing because the deal on the letter is better then the ones on their website.

The deal they are offering me is the same as the Very Impressive Package (xl tv, xl broadband and xl phone, v+ box, 2nd set top box) but instead of £85 that it says it costs on the website, they are offering it to me for £65 a month.

Now this wasnt some deal i got by telling lies to the complaints department about moving to sky or some other ISP to try and get a better package out of them. Which is why im wondering if they are giving all current customers the chance to get this deal for £65 per month, or if its just because im a long term customer (must be about 8 years now ive been with blueyonder).

Also, a bit off topic, but while wiring up the scart leads to a new dvd player, i noticed the back of my current set top box (a realy old PACE box i got when i first joined telewest) has a ethernet, a serial and a parallel port on it. Now i assume the ethernet port is to use the set top box in place of a cable modem, which is pointless as i have a cable modem, but what are the serial and parallel ports used for?

And finally, when i get the v+ box that comes with this deal, can i link it to a PC to save whatever programs are recorded onto it? Because 80gb is not a lot, and will mean erasing stuff just a few weeks after it was recorded to make more room if it cant be transfered to a pc.

Got the same thing posted to me, but I've been with them 18 months. Considering the deal only increases my phone and BB up a notch it's not really worth doubling the price for me.

Yes the old STB's were going to be used instead of a separate cable modem IIRC but they only used them in some areas, I think they were working on some sort of internet tv but don't quote me on it.

The V+ box is not designed to store TV, as technically you're not allowed to keep recordings from TV, VCR's you were only supposed to record the program, then watch and erase, not store it for ever on a shelf somewhere.

Its a shame its not possible to transfer stuff to a pc directly from the box, but it shouldnt be too hard to set something up that will allow me to save the tv programs if i want.

As for the deal itself, it works out well for me, because im paying the same ammount at the moment for XL TV, L broadband and L phone and a 2nd phone line + call baring, so if i drop the 2nd phone line that i dont use anymore, and the call barring which i dont realy need either, ill be able to upgrade to this new package and go from L broadband to XL, and L phone to XL, as well as get a V+ box, and a 2nd box along with it.

ReReading my letter it doesn't mention the second STB, just offers the 3 XL packages for £65 instead of £96, looks like we've been issued with different letters.

The STB outputs scart, so technically there's nothing stopping you re-recording it onto other media, VCR, DVD, TV tuner card etc if you want to save it.

Hmm I'm paying like £80 a month at the moment; might phone them and say I got the letter.. Is there any codes on the letter?

Im not sure my letter mentioned everything that either, but when we phoned VM to talk about the offer, like making sure it wasnt £65 for the first 3 months or anything like that, they told us we also get to use a 2nd STB, although the person was unclear if we simply move our old STB to a new room, or if they come and remove our old STB, and give us 2 shiny new ones, one of which is v+

I dont think there was any sort of code on it at all, it was just a glosy leaflet type thing with details of the offer, and my name printed on it.

can you scan this letter mate?

Thanks for posting up about this triple XL deal Dist, I rang VM and mentioned the offer, they put me on it but with 2 phone lines - £67 a month (XLtv, XLbb, XLphone X2).

Considering I am currently on 2meg - £18, Sky tv - £45 and phone line £11 plus calls, I think it is great value.
