If you're prepared to leave for Sky for a year, you have two chances to get a better deal: retentions by threatening to leave as you mention above, and new customer deals when you leave Sky.
'Why do new customers get a better deal than me' is an oft-asked question, to which one of the answers is...one of their key performance indicators at the AGM will be number of new subscribers. It's also a headline press figure (market share). They need to attract new customers to grow market share; from their point of view, a long-term customer is fairly unlikely to actually leave. They rely on inertia.
I totally understand the gripe of feeling less valued than a new customer, sad fact is it's true
